My best friend wants to name her daughter Niv. I've never actually heard or seen this name before. Have any of you ever heard it before? Do you have any idea where it might come from? (Maybe it's a nickname for something else?) Or, do you have any suggestions for a more formal name that could have Niv as nn?

Her husband is German (and they'll be living in Germany). The baby's middle name will likely be Anneliese (a family name--I'm unsure of the spelling they'll use). What do you think of the name Niv Anneliese?

The Behind the Name website lists Niv as an Aramaic/ Jewish male name, meaning "speech, expression". I've never heard it before!

I had never heard of it before, although I have heard of the similar Neve/Niamh. I also looked it up on Behindthename:

NIV
Gender: Masculine
Usage: Jewish
Other Scripts: נִיב (Hebrew)
Means "speech, expression" in Aramaic.

I think it sounds more like a nickname to me.

I searched for "Niv" via Google. Most of the first 10 results concerned something called the New International Version of the Bible, but in the second 10 there were a couple of websites about people named Niv - "Niv Gilboa's Homepage" and "Niv Drory's Homepage" - not that that really tells you anything, other than that people with this name exist. Sorry, that's all I have on this name. I can't think of anything that it might be short for.
