To normal names? and I'm new!
| Mon, 09-19-2005 - 9:48pm |
Hi, I am new here and my husband and I are ttc. We were looking at baby names and I am wondering if the names we like are to normal or to traditional. We don't want something way out there but we don't want something that 10 kids will be named when they are in class. So the names are: Brandon, Daniel, Natalie, and Breanna (or Brianna). We really like all of them but I wanted some opinions on them. So, thanks girls and I'll see you around!

Hi Sherry!
I'm an early childhood educator from SW Ontario, and from my experience those are all very normal, fairly common names. Brandon is a name I saw a lot five or six years ago, but those Brandons seem to have turned into Bradens and Brendans recently, which could be good or could be like some one my age (30) being called Beverly or Linda.
According to the SSA (just to confirm what I saw in my classrooms) Brandon hit the peak of its popularity in 1992-4, at #6, and has since dropped to #22 (which still makes it very common).
Daniel (I'll stick with the SSA rankings) has been in the top 10 for more than 20 years. The strength of the name is that no one will profile your son, which they may for Brandon (suburban, run-of-the-mill, slightly spoiled. As a teacher I know that we make a conscious effort to get rid of all of the prejudices and stereotypes, but I KNOW I'm not the only one who groans inwardly at an Amberleigha or what have you- teachers make a conscious effort not to form an opinion of a child based on their name, but I'll not say anything about opinions of the poor child's parents). Daniel, Danny or Dan can be formal or informal, and will grow with your son.
Natalie is #19, and has been climbing steadily for the last few decades. It is also, in theory a perfectly neutral name, but for me personally I've only ever taught Natalies who quite deserved the Bratalie Natalie nn their classmates had given them, but I think that's just unfortunate on my part. Oh well.
Breanna is an invented american-irish name (well, Edmund Spenser used 'Briana' in the Faerie Queen of the 1500s, but I'm sure you're not naming your daughter after THAT Briana) that appeared among the 1000 most popular names about 30 years ago. Brianna is at #17, while four other variations appear in the top 1000 most popular american names of 2004. Like with Brandon, your daughter could possibly suffer some slightly negative profiling.
All four names are in the current top 20- is that deliberate on your part or are you just really in tune with the generation?

Also, my name is Sienna, I was born in 1976. The whole name profiling thing is an issue I am VERY VERY sensitive to, with a name that belongs to Certain Actresses and a gaggle of girls under the age of 12. People often express surprise at my plain appearance, and the fact that I can string together several more-or-less intelligent sentences. Therefore, Brianna and Brandon are really not my style. But I suppose that's just a personal thing.
Good Luck!

PS I thought I'd list the #15-25 names in the USA and in the UK, for comparison and to help you pick a style you like or something (but mostly so I can continue to poke about the name sites). Daniel is #5 in the UK, while Brandon is #44. Natalie was last in the top 100 in 2000, at #94, and Brianna hasn't been in the top 100 in the last 5 years.
