Now I'm liking a super popular name

While Ewan is still in the top spot, I'm starting to second guess it and the name that I like instead is Ethan, which is very popular according to the government lists. I personally don't know any Ethans, and I don't know that it is that bad to like a popular name, but what do you all think?

I actually like Ewan better than Ethan, but both are handsome. I don't think it's that big of a deal to like a popular name. I like a lot of popular names. The key for me is how much I like the name. For example, Ella and Lily have been on my list at one point or another and I've abandoned them due to rising popularity. Olivia I'm still considering. Yes, it's more popular than Ella or Lily, but I simply love it.

If you name your son Ethan and come to find there are 3 others in his Kindergarten class, will you regret your decision?

On the flip side, I think it's risky to pick a name just because it's less popular (i.e. choosing Ewan if you like Ethan better) because you never know if you'll run into others. Although Ethan is more popular on the charts, your son could have another Ewan in his class and no Ethans.

Sorry for the ramble. Bottom line: I would go with the name you like better regardless of popularity.

Good Luck!

My son, Ethan Robert, which will be 7 in September, goes to a school with only 150 students and there is 1 other Ethan which is a couple years older than him. My youngest son will be starting Junior Kindergarten in the fall and I did receive the class list and there is an Ethan that will be in his class. So, that will be 3 Ethan's out of 150 students. I guess it could be a lot worse. I know of 2 more Ethan's, one is the same age as mine (6 or 7) and the other is 3 or 4. I guess it depends on your area. I'm in Ontario, Canada and if I remember correctly so are you, lol. When we were at Canada's Wonderland a few weeks ago I did hear the name Ethan called 3 different times and I'd say they were all under the age of 4. If you love a name, go with it. I don't regret naming him Ethan, I love the name, very strong and it suits him to a tee. I don't mind Ewan but I do think that it is going to gain in popularity soon. I know of 1 that is about 2 yrs old and I've heard it before at my son's swimming lessons. Ewan is starting to grow on me, I definitely like it better than Owen. Another choice for you may be Keethan, not sure if you're into something different like that or not... :)

I do like Ethan (loved it almost 6 years ago when we first starting thinking of names for what turned out to be our first dd LOL), but the popularity has lessened the appeal for me. Also, I genuinely LOVE Ewan, so I'd still vote for that for you. ;)

In general, though, it really just depends which name you like more. If you really love Ethan, and Ewan is simply a less-popular alternative, forget popularity and go with the name you love (speaking from experience, as the mom of both a Kaitlyn and an Abigail LOL). If you like them both equally, you can use popularity as a deciding factor (that's how I got my Devanie LOL).

Hope my rambling helps. ;)

Personally I like Ethan better than Ewan. And I do not know any Ethan's, or Ewan's for that matter.

i've heard a couple Ethan's, but not alot of them, not like Michael, Jennifer.
i think most important, popular or not, is what you love, what our spirit says. a name says it all about who we are. may be super popular for a century, but for some reason, people continue to name boys Michael, their heart and soul says they love that name. that's what counts right?

I like Ethan MUCH MUCH MUCH better than Ewan (the Ewwwwww look turns me off and so does the You Win pronunciation. sorry.). Honestly, I do not know any little Ethans.

The name Ewan in nms. I like Evan and Ethan. The problem I see with the name Ewan is that I would think that the "w" should be a "v" (a typo) and pronounce it Evan and I think a lot of people would pronounce it that way too. JMO. I work at a busy pediatrics office and one of the most annoying things is people giving their children different names and the parents getting annoyed when we mis-pronounce their childs name. Sorry if this is upseting. Good luck!
