Okay to name baby Katie?
| Mon, 12-13-2004 - 2:05am |
I am 29 weeks pg with my second girl. I LOVE the name Katie. I just keep coming back to it. However, before DH and I met we were both almost engaged to different people. He almost married a girl named Katie. I never knew her, and we dont bring up our ex's. Would it be okay to name this baby Katie, or do you think it would just be weird?
We both also love the name Ellie, but we get so many negative responses that we are exploring different options. So what do you think, is Katie in or out? TIA.

When I read your post I thought you meant using Katie as a fn instead of the more formal Katherine with Katie as a nn. In your circumstance with Katie as a very serious ex for you DH I would nix it from consideration.
Ellie is nice (popular, but nice) but I prefer it as a nn to something else. Some ideas:
Elizabeth
Isabelle
Gabrielle
Eleanor
Danielle
Giselle
Anabelle
I'm not sure. I guess if it didn't really bother either of you at all then it would be all right. I don't think I could do that. (It would bother me I think)
I have a Katelyn that we also call Kate or Katie. Or Kathryn or Kathleen,
I also like Elisabeth/ Elizabeth/ Elysabeth
I couldn't let my baby share a name with my husband's ex-girlfried. Also, the name Katie is quite dated, and really, quite boring and overused. It's also a toddler's name, not an adult's (think Katie Couric--do you really want your child on TV at 45 still calling herself Katie)?
I love the name Catherine, and if you named her that, you could still use Cate or Catie as a nickname. I prefer Catherine spelled with a C, but even spelled with a K, it's better than Katie. Also, have you considered Cathleen/Kathleen. I love this name!
I LOVE, LOVE the name Ellie, and I think you should go with that. I don't think it requires a more formal first name at all. The name sounds fine alone. If you wanted to use a more formal name, Elinor, Elisabeth, or Ella would work beautifully!
I personally like the name Katie. It is after all, my name.....lol. Short for Kathryn...I do go by Kate sometimes, from pepole who are close to me, but to everyone else, I'm Katie.
However, I could not name my child the same name as one of my DH's exes....maybe that's petty, but I really couldn't bring myself to it. However if it doesn't bother you, then I see no problem with it.
And I love Ellie also, but as a nn for something else. My SIL was going to call her daughter Ellie as a NN for Eliza, which I tought was adorable, but somehow she ended up being Rose, which is her MN..Eliza Rose. Anyhow, Eliza might be a nice option w/ nn Ellie.
HTH!
Katie
I think you should see how your dh feels. Guess I'd feel a little weird about the Katie part. We almost named our dh Kennedy, but since my 1st love's name was Kenny I just couldn't do it. Too close. I like Ellie though and don't think there is anything wrong with that name!

I personally wouldn't name a baby after an ex boyfriend or girlfriend. but more than that I think the name Katie is a nickname. I do realize some people use it stand-alone. Same with Ellie, to me that's a nickname.
I'm not sure why you're getting the negative reponses to Ellie, it might be that you'd get more positive responses if you said you were naming her Ella, Eleanor, Ellen, Elizabeth, Eliza or Elyse and calling her Ellie.
personally of the above the only one I like is Elyse (or Elise). the others are far too traditional, old-fashioned for my tastes, but again, I realize many people that is their taste.
for Katie as a formal name you could go with Katherine, Kathryn, Kathleen, Katelyn, and call her Katie if the ex-girlfriend thing doesn't haunt you too much
my sons sil is named Katie...his wife is named Rebecca...their parents named their second dd Katie cause they always used Becky for the older one and decided they would just name #2 the name they were going to use...
Becky is very happy she has Rebecca to use for professional purposes, etc..Katie tells people that *my parents thought I was going to be a little girl my whole life"....
