i'm due in january, and i think i should make a decision soon!!! i don't know if its a boy or a girl, so i had to choose names for both. my name is eliska marie (pronounced uh-lis-kuh), my sister is adele louise, and brother jude michael....so i wanted something different because we have all really enjoyed our distinct names. for a girl, i really like "cadence marie" cadence being an old french word that has to do with harmony and tone...and "lathe michael" for a boy. this is the one thats really giving me grief!! i really like it because i think its a strong and unusual name, but a lathe is a machine that you would find in a machine shop! my friends say they like it, but i'm not sure if they're just being nice. i thought maybe i could get some totally un-biased opinions! any thoughts are graciously appreciated:)

Well, I did a quick search, and Laith (this spelling)appears to be an Arabic name that means "lion." If I were going to use the name, I'd go with this spelling, I think.

Cadence Marie is sweet.

I wouldn't use Lathe, but Laith or Leith would work.

I love the name Cadence. In my music theory class we learned the definition as "a musical pause in time." It's kind of where you feel the music reaching a high (or low.) Very neat.

I would spell Lathe differently also.

I like Cadence a lot. I think it's ideal b/c it's a recognizable, but not common name. I like the meaning, too.

I agree that an alternate spelling for Lathe (e.g., Laith) would be preferable. If you are still on the fence about Lathe/Laith, here are some alternatives that have a similar sound:

Blaise

Dane

Gage

Leif (LAY-fe)

Sage

Teague

Wade

Good luck!

I like both names, but I agree on the spelling of Lathe - not my favorite version.

I like Lathe...but Boys are cruel. He might get picked on forever...or people will fall inlove with the name. It is a very strong name though.

Cadence is nice(Cady is a cute nn), but I'm going to be honest here - not loving Lathe. Maybe it will grow on me. BUT if you love it and the people who matter to you like it, who cares what a stranger like me thinks. It sounds like you all enjoyed having unique names, so your child probably will as well. You'll have to be prepared for occasional comments or questions about his name from other parents, or whomever. But assuming you can deal with that reasonably well, name him Lathe if you love Lathe!

I second the motion to spell Lathe differently: Laith or Leith. Pronounce it the same, but now it isn't a tool. :)

Laith is actually very cool and interesting, much like Cadence.
