& still no girl's name for Charlotte's sister.

While popularity is an issue (because these boards make me nervous that Charlotte is becoming too popular, even though I have yet to meet another one younger than 30), my husband absolutely loves the nn Ellie/Elle, and I said I could go along with that as long as she would have a more formal and unknown name (my favorite being Penelope right now). My husband likes Eleanor, but I just feel that it is just not the one. So any suggestions for names that can be shortened to Elle that might not be heard everyday on the playground?

Also, my husband likes Josie short for Josephine, but he just doesn't love it, and I am much the same way. Plus I have heard this name much more recently. Some others that we have considered: Evelyn "Evie" (although I prefered Genevieve, Lucille "Lucy", Margaret Kathleen "Maisy". Any suggestions that match this style?

The boy's names that we are considering are: John Joseph "Johnny", Henry Patrick or Patrick Michael.

I have never been an Eleanor fan either. Penelope is interesting, though I like Nelly/Nella the best from that name.

What about:
Giselle
Eloise
Marielle
Elise
Daniela
Noelle

In regards to Josie:
Jocelyn
Joanne
Johanna

Another name you might like is Geneva - this is a good compromise between Evelyn and Genevieve. With Geneva you can do the nn Ginny/Eva/Evie. Charlotte and Geneva sound great together!

I also really like Margaret Kathleen, nn Maisie!

Some more names you might like:
Adeline, nn Addie/Ada
Virginia
Georgia
Mattea
Felicity
Beatrice/Beatrix
Marina
Rosalie, nn Rose/Rosie

Good luck,
Brooke

I like Genevieve and Lucille from the list you gave for girls. Other suggestions:

Ellen
Alice
Eliza
Mabel
Ruby
Stella/ Estelle
Molly (may be too popular for your liking though)
Lydia
Susannah
Helen
Ruth
Theresa
Cora
Violet
Nora

My favorites from your list are Genevieve (love this!) or Evelyn for a girl and Henry for a boy.

As for "Elle" names, some of these may have already been mentioned but here are some ideas. HTH and good luck!

Elizabeth/Elisabeth (very nice with Charlotte)
Elaina/Elena/Elana
Elia
Ellery
Ellen
Elaine
Adelle
Gabrielle
Giselle
Isabelle

Also, I kind of like Carolyn/Caroline. They seem to have the same feel as some of your other name suggestions and go well with Charlotte. Just an idea!

I think Penelope or Eleanor (love Eleanor, btw) would work for you, but if you're not completely sold, here are a few more that might lend themselves to the Elle/Ellie nn:

Eloise -- I know it's been mentioned, but this was my first thought for you. The nn is obvious, but Eloise isn't at risk of becoming overly-popular anytime soon (it's not even IN the SSA's top 1000 yet). ;) Also a very spunky, classic choice.

Adelle/Claribel/Norabel, etc. -- meaning a less-common "-el(le)" ending name.
Emeline/Eumelia
Eleri -- not Ellery. ;) Eleri is a feminine Welsh name.
Amelie
Ayelet
Eveline -- Evie's obviously a possibility here as well
Fallon
Althea/Alethea
Allegra
Alanna(h)
Leonie
Eulalia
Millicent/Melisande

Along those same lines, you may also like Adela, Adelia, Bidelia or Cordelia, nn Della (the nn Elle could be had here as well, but thought I'd mention Della as a less-common option that might still appeal to dh's taste). ;)

You seem to be leaning toward less-common, old-fashioned names with nn options, so similar suggestions would include:

Magdalene/Magdala -- Maggie
Guinevere -- Gwen or Evie
Gwendolen/Gwyneth -- Gwen
Emilia/Emeline/Millicent/Camille -- Millie
Matilda -- Tilda, Tilly or Millie
Talulla/Tallulah -- Tula, Tilly, Lula or Lulu
Beatrix/Beatrice -- Bette, Betty, Betsy, Bess, Tess, Bixi/Pixi
Isadora/Isidora -- Izzy
Vivian/Vivienne -- Vivi (Vivian is in the 220s, though, just so you're aware)
Lillian/Lilith/Lillias/Lileas -- Lily (if you're comfortable with the nn Elle/ie, Lily might also appeal)
Felicity -- Fliss, Flick, Lissa, Lissy, Izzy
Agatha/Agnes -- Aggie

HTH ;)

Hi there. Only four weeks to go? How exciting!

I definitly like your style. Elle/ie is very cute w/Charlotte, although it is drastically popular as a nn. Penelope is definitly fun & different. Eleanor is fine, but not nearly as interesting. Here are some more underused classics that have Elle/ie as a possible nn & work w/Charlotte:

Annabel(le)

Elodie

Eloise-Yes!

Elena

Elaine

Estella-Fabulous!

Eliana-This may be a bit Hebrew next to Charlotte, but it is so pretty.

Eliza-Ooh, that works well if you don't think Eliza is too nick-namey.

Giselle/a-Okay, it's a tad exotic next to Charlotte. Maybe not?

Helen-This is nms, but it seems to fit your criteria nicely.

Mirielle

Miriella

Noelle

Here are some more classic suggestions w/fun nick-names:

Annabel nn Annie

Anne nn Annie

Annelise nn Annie or Nellie?

Beatrice nn Bea

Elsa nn Elsie

Emilia nn Millie

Frances nn Fracncie-Aw!

Genevieve nn Ginny?

Harriet nn Hattie

Kathleen nn Kitty(!)

Louisa nn Lulu-cute cute. Lulu works for a ton of full names if you like that.

Lydia nn Lydie

Matilda nn Maisie or Millie

Madeline nn Maisie

Maureen nn Maisie or Molly perhaps

Philippa nn Pippa

Rose nn Rosie

Rosalie nn Rosie

Sabrina nn Sally or Sassy

Theadora nn Thea or Dora

Violet nn Vivi or Lettie

Winifred nn Winnie

I really like all of your boy ideas. Henry & Patrick are two of my all time favorites, but Johnny is cute & refreshing.

Hope this helps!

I have a Charlotte. She's 3, so there are other little ones out there with the name (although I've only met 2). That being said, I like either Eleanor or Elisabeth, nn Ellie much better than Penelope (with sis Charlotte). Charlotte is such a soft name and Penelope is so spunky comparatively. I just don't think they complement each other. I don't particularly like Evelyn for you (not nearly as literary as Charlotte) but either Margaret or Lucinda would work (prefer Lucinda to Lucille by a mile). Both Maisie and Lucy are alright with Charlotte, although I think I prefer Margaret, nn Maisie. Lucy seems to go with Penelope to me (spunky). Josephine is terrific with Charlotte, imo. How about:

Catherine, nn Katie
Elise, Lise
Edith, nn Edie (better than Evelyn by a mile)
Julia
Laura
Madeleine, nn Maddie
Susannah, nn Sukey
Caroline, nn Carrie
Jane
Clara
Eliza
Frances, nn Francie
Rose, nn Rosie
Louise, nn Lulu
Virginia
Alice

I love the name Henry Patrick, and think Charlotte & Henry make a great sib-set.

I personally have only met one Charlotte ever, and she is the mother of one of my best friends, so I don't think it is becoming toooo popular as of yet.

Formal Names with Nickname Elle/Ellie:
Isabelle
Janelle
Elaine (might be a bit of a stretch, but I could see a little girl named Elaine nicknamed Ellie)
Eloise
Giselle
Ellis
Danielle
Annabelle

Out of those, I like Charlotte & Isabelle (nn Elle), Charlotte & Ellis (nn Ellie), Charlotte & Danielle (nn Elle)

Hope this helps!
