not sure...my fn is "carly", so i got called "car" all the time (i HATED it...it opened up other kids calling me truck, bus, train, etc...to this day, i still only allow my parents, my sister, and my DH to call me by that nn, and only in private), plus i always thought it was masculine sounding...i guess as long as you're ok with the motor vehicle references that other kids might use for teasing (i've seen much worse than that tho), it's a great name for a boy!
Well, I like Kerr which can be pronounced the same way, so I think there is room for it. It probably does open up for some light teasing, but I can't think of anything really terrible. (But I have a small Penn...I'm maybe not the most unbiased person on this kind of name.)
I do think it's rather handsome and if you're not feeling daring I would definitely give it a thumbs-up for a middle name.

I really like the idea of using family names.
