Donovan is a very nice name. Whether to use it for a baby would depend, I suppose, on whether they and/or their kids continue to associate it with their dog and/or with the idea of choking to death. Some people would, others wouldn't. Personally, I wouldn't use the name, even though I like it; but I don't think it would be bad to use it, so long as neither she nor her husband nor the kids thinks of the poor dog when they hear the name. Some other people, if they know about the puppy, though, might find it in poor taste, so they need to be prepared for that reaction from time to time.
I would personally not use the name. First, because I'm just really burned out on Donavon, especially after the brat in my mother's pre-school class (whose name is actually spelled Donavyn...a boy, too! Ugh.). Second, because I would just not want my child to share the name of a previous member of the family who choked to death. It would just be too sad for me to have the memory of it conjured every time I said my child's name, or wrote it.
I personally wouldn't do that, but everyone is different. I don't know, I do find it a little strange to name a person after a pet- whether the pet is still alive or not. I agree with the poster that said it might make them a little sad, too, considering the pet's untimely death...
It sounds fabulous and it doesn't have the baggage for them of Donovan. (If it had been a beloved pet who had lived to a ripe old age and passed peacefully in his sleep, it would be different...but I have just a big enough pinch of superstition (that I try to suppress) to name my child after a family pet that died so abruptly.)
I love the name Donovan, but I probably wouldn't use it as a fn b/c of remembering the past.
