Our last name is making this hard!

AY! Why is baby naming so hard?! I thought dh and I were settled on either Ezra Jack or Eli Jack, but I don't love Ezra and dh doesn't like Eli. BIG SIGH. I'd love to find a 2-syllable non-Biblical name that evokes "strong" boy. Wyatt was a great option, but dh doesn't like it.

The things about our last name: Well, for starters it starts with an "S". So anything ending with the "s" sound is out. For example, "Max S_______" comes out "Mac S________". "Russ S________" somes out "Ruh S________." THEN, it's two-syllable name ending in -er. SO anything ending in -er is out -- it just sounds off to have two two-syllable names ending in -er together. I like River, but it sounds weird (let alone that River with our last name comes out sounding very close to River Otter, lol!!!!). FINALLY, my dh thinks it sounds very German. I don't happen to agree with him, but b/c he thinks this, anything that sounds other than German (or maybe Scandinavian, and of course Anglo) is out. I like Paolo. Nope. I like Marco. Nope. Blah, blah, blah.

Not necessarily asking for suggestions (since we've BTDT here!); just whining. I'm 31 weeks pregnant. I can whine, right?

Since we have some similar tastes in names, here are a few biblical names we've considered (I'll leave off Amos and Moses...a little sssssy with your name):

Jotham (pr. JOE-tham)
Abel
Shepherd (more of a biblical concept than a bibical name, but I like it.)
Gideon
Reuben
Abram
Eben
Ephraim

Oh, I don't mind the suggestions! And based on them, I can't *believe* I'm seriously considering asking my dh if he likes "Axel" !!!! Oy vey. Do I like it? I can't decide ... it's not a name I would ever have considered before, but it's growing on me. Or at least I keep thinking about it. Axel Jack doesn't work very well, IMHO, but a middle name won't be a problem (Hubbard, McNeil, Davies, William, Otto, Earl, Rudolph -- all family names we could use).

It's *German* and has a good meaning (father of peace). It's two syllables and non-Bible ('cept it's based on Absalom, David's son, but most people won't know that). It's pretty strong-boy sounding to be sure. So it meets my criteria.

DH will either immediately mention Axl Rose from G&R, which will like mean "no" -- or he'll look up with a pondering look in his eye and say "Maybe". (He won't say yes immediately, never does). The question is -- when do I throw in the info. about its ethnicity and meaning -- before I ever say "Axel" -- or when he pauses after I say it?

Wait, it's almost 3 p.m.! Break time at work. I'll call him and get his opinion.

Tee-hee ...

UPDATE:
Well, he didn't say NO, lol. He did mention G&R, as predicted, but then I told him that it's German and means "father of peace" and he said "Really?" He chuckled a bit about it -- but sounded somewhat intrigued and (the biggie), he didn't say no. Our last baby -- two years old this weekend -- is Ike, and he thought Ike and Axel sounded fun together. Bubbas.

I think Axel is similar to Jemima -- Jemima is a really pretty name, but most people can't get over the syrup connection. Same with Axel and heavy metal. These names need to be liberated, eh?

I have to say--I LOVE Jemima. It doesn't suit us as a first name, but I could see it as a mn with a lot of the names we've considered.

The first time I saw Axel mentioned on the board, I really disliked it but it's grown on me too and I think it'll be the same for most people.
