So, right now we have 1 girl name and 1 boy name picked out. The girl name is Lucinda Renee which means "light" "reborn." The boy name is my husband's name, Matthew Anthony which means "gift of the Lord" "priceless." I really want to use "the II" instead of Jr., but was recently told that the II is what you use if you use someone other than the father's name. I just don't like Jr., but I've always wanted to use my husband's name.

What do ya'll think...

...about both names?

...about using II instead of Jr.?

I LOVE Lucinda Renee... it is very sweet, feminine, and classy. As a nice plus, it is not very common either. LOVE it!

Matthew Anthony is a nice enough name, although Matthew is very common. I do agree that you have to use Jr. over II. I am not really a huge fan of Jr's but do love the idea of using names that have significance. But will it get confusing have two Matthew's in the house?

Lucinda Renee is really lovely! Plus, nn's Lucy or Cindy are nice too.

Matthew Anthony is an OK name, but you heard right that the II is used if you name the child directly after someone other than the father (like grandfather or uncle, for example). If I were you, I'd use one of the names, and then find a family name from your side to include also. I am generally not a big fan of Jr's in general, so I'd prefer personally to use Matthew or Anthony as the mn, and then something else as the fn. It still has that great connection w/ his dad, but doesn't run into the Jr. issue or the name confusion.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

First off, Lucinda is very sweet. ;)

As others have said, Matthew Anthony, Jr. (he WOULD be a junior, not II, I'm afraid) is nice enough, and if you

Wait. I was wrong, so I am reposting my reply.

The "Jr." is used while dad is still alive. When dad passes away, the "Jr." becomes "II."

Subsequent boys with the same name are: III, IV, etc.

So,

Jon Doe (living)
Jon Doe Jr.
Jon Doe III

or

Jon Doe (deceased)
Jon Doe II
Jone Doe III

Here's a source: http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=53990

But, I agree with other posters that I personally prefer for children to have their own name altogether, or dad's name as a middle name.

The change of form based on living or deceased fathers, grandfathers, etc. of the same name is all but defunct. It actually mainly applied to more than two identically-named persons (John Sr, Jr. III, etc.) along a familiar line and its basic intent was to stop the progression to greater number (John XIV ) if the tradition were to continue for generations. In other words, rather than Jr. becoming II and his son remaining III, grandson IV, et al, Jr. would actually become Sr., HIS son Jr., his grandson III ... all moving up one notch. You get the idea. ;)

This tends to cause confusion and isn't in general practice any longer, since it's not as likely for a name to continue for more than a few generations.

So to the OP ... again, if you don't want a Jr., just don't use the exact same name. ;)

How about Anthony Matthew... same name as dad's just reversed (and you don't have to deal with the Jr/II issue). Plus, he would have a different first name as dad, so no confusion- assuming that dad goes by Matt/Matthew.

I have not read all of the other posts, so I am sorry if this has already been mentioned.

Good Luck!
