I was wondering what your opinions are on the girl name Geena? Do you think it's outdated or a refreshing change? I really don't like outdated names and my tastes tend to sway the opposite way (as most of you are aware) but I am liking this name. I think it's a name that is known but not too many out there. I don't know of anyone with this name. WDYT? TIA!

Love this name, however I prefer it spelled Gina. This name is evocative of an Italian siren to me for some reason. Must be Gina Lollabrigida (sp??). I'm sure you aren't hoping for "siren" but its classy siren not trashy like a stripper (insert obvious stripper names here). Gina is a GREAT name! Go for it! Betty

We've pondered over a few different spellings: Gina, Gena, Jeena, Geena... We like Geena the best. I know Gina is the obvious spelling, I think that's why I like Geena. ;)

It's an OK name in my opinion. I like the spelling Gina better.

Hi there,

I don't necessarily think of it as outdated, but the name Gina has baggage for me. Where I'm from it's used as a slangy word to describe a stereotypical italian girl - same as Gino is used for the male version of this stereotype. I, for one, hate those kinds of stereotypes and slang, but I can't divorce the name Gina from that association. It seems I heard it all throughout highschool because there is a fair sized town near where I grew up that has a large italian population and the kids that came from there (many of whom went to my highschool) were constantly being labelled as Ginas and Ginos. Is that just a regional thing? (I'm from Ontario, Canada).

Gina is a name with strong ties to the Italian population (although I've never seen anyone change the spelling to Geena besides the actress). It was actually overwhelmingly popular with my generation and the one prior (so lots of Italian Ginas in their 20s/30s/40s now), so it does seem rather dated to me. It seemed like every Italian family had at least one Gina, at least around here. Still, the name itself isn't terrible, but I really dislike the Geena spelling. It looks like someone heard the name and just tried to spell it phonetically without knowing the actual spelling, KWIM? If you're really liking the name but concerned about it seeming outdated, perhaps you could use it as a nn (Virginia, Regina, Gianine, etc.).

I know a little girl about 10 with that spelling. I think it's cute

I don't think it's outdated, I think it isn't dated to an era the way some names are. it's just kinda been around, mostly spelled Gina, never high on the popularity charts.

good luck

I'm in Ontario, too. The Gino comment is well known here in my area as well. As for Gina, I've never heard that.

It feels dated to me. Maybe that's because I know several Ginas (none of them Italian) all in the age range of 20s-30s. No, it's not an overly popular name, but it doesn't have many good associations for me IRL, and I honestly don't think it's that pretty.

Surprisingly, the Geena spelling doesn't both me as much as some other "creative spellings", but maybe that's b/c of the Geena Davis association.
