Please help me with nicknames!

My DH is insistent that he is going to use a nickname for our child. Since I seem to be losing this battle, I would at least like to come up with a nickname I would be okay with. These are the two names we are thinking of using if we have a girl and some nicknames that might fit well. What do you think about them? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

LORELEI - Lore, Leila, Lola. (DH likes Lori or Lora)
JULIANA - Jules, Ana, or Ju Ju (just for a little kid - I like the "It's a Wonderful Life Reference"). (DH likes Julie).

I suggest letting your husband pick. Your husband can have a nickname for your daughter - that doesnt mean everyone else has to call her by the nickname. It can be a special thing between Daddy and daughter.

My son's name is Holden. I call him Holden as does everyone else. My husband calls him "H".

Yea, I'm not crazy about nns either. But if I HAD to chose one for these names I'd pick...

LORELEI - Lora
JULIANA - Julie

Not to disagree with the pp, but already knowing where this is coming from, by all means let dh pick ... from a list of nns you actually like as well.

LORELEI - Lore, Leila, Lola. (DH likes Lori or Lora)

You already know I like any of these, though I agree with you on your dh's picks. While I like Laura and similar names

I'm glad you know where I'm coming from! You know my long history with these names. :)

I would definitely prefer to come up with an agreed upon nickname. Otherwise, I'll have other people calling her Lori/Lora or Julie because they hear my DH refer to her by those names. If those nicknames happen to evolve over time or she likes them, then so be it. I can't help that. :) They would not be my first choices, though.

As for Leila, I would pronounce it like Lila (LIE-LA). I was just using the last letters of Lorelei. Is Leila normally pronounced LAY-LA? I hadn't thought of LuLu. That is cute - especially for a small child, IMO.

Do you think using Julia as a nn would be okay for Juliana? I wonder if it almost defeats the purpose of using Juliana, though. If we're going to refer to her as Julia, should we just go ahead and name her that, KWIM? I like your other suggestions too - I hadn't thought of June/Junie.

I really like the name Rory. It's used as a nickname for Lorelei on the Gilmore Girls, though I don't know how common that is.

It might also be a good choice for a nickname for your dh, as it has a little bit more of a "rough and tumble" feel than the very feminine Lorelei, and perhaps that is what he is seeking in a nickname?

Aw ... you knew I'd understand. I have Abigail/Aila, after all. Trust me, it's worth it to love your dd's name -- nn and all --

I don't really watch that show so I'm probably way off here but I always thought Lorelei was the mom and Rory was the daughter?

I agree with your DH if your gonna use a nn Lora or Julie would sound natural for shorting the names.

Our only kid that uses a nn by many is Charles Jr. we get the ocasional Lil' Chuck, Chuckie or Junior DH goes by Chuck. The older kiddos stopped ppl from calling them by nn's all on their own. Poor Mason was called Mas all the time. The only person he doesn't flip out on when called that is the 2yr old. But he cuts the ending off of all their names still. Mason is Mas, Harley is Har and Toni is Tone but only to Chuckie. DH uses nns for the kids too Buddy, Princess, Sweetie and Chuckie. LOL Anyone else tries it and they correct them that this isn't thier name. Maybe your little one will nip it in the bud on her own. We are going with Lorelei Paige but she'll be able to go by whatever she chooses.

Mason 9, Harley 7, Toni Gwynn 5, Charles Jr. 2, ^Wyatt^ 2-06 and Lorelei EDD 8-16-07
