We went in to the birth with a "short list" of names, thinking we'd "see what she looked like".

CONGRATLUATIONS!
From your list I like Lorna Catherine the best.
Other ideas
Catherine Eve (for New Year's Eve)
Catherine Noelle (for the season)
Catherine Wynter
Catherine Mariah (form of Mary)
hope these help and be sure to let us know your decision
big congratulations on your new little girl!
sylvester means "of the forest" directly in reference to the trees, so here are some names that are based on the name Sylvester, or have reference to forests and trees:
Sylvana - Italian
Sylvania - Latin
Sylvia - Latin
Sylvie - French
Sylvina - English
Sylvonna - English
Acacia - Greek
Acantha - Greek
Adara - Irish
Berkeley - English
Dalia - Arabic
Daphne - Greek
Dara - Gaelic
Elana - Hebrew
Elanna - Hebrew
Hollis - English
Holly - English
Lindsay - English
Lindsey - English
Linnae - Scandinavian
Linnea - Scandinavian
you could also give her the middle name Eve, or a name with eve in the meaning:
Eva Hebrew
Evette Celtic (or Yvette)
Evita
Evonne (Yvonne, Yvonna, Ivanna, etc)
and could also name her for her dark hair:
Brenna Celtic Female Raven maid, dark-haired
Darcy Gaelic Dark
Melinda Greek Female gentle, dark
Maura Latin Female dark
i think my favorites (personally) are:
Catherine Sylvonna
Catherine Berkeley
Catherine Hollis
Catherine Linnea/Linnae (altho some might take the -ine at the end of Catherine and the -inn in Linnea to task)
Catherine Brenna
Catherine Darcy
hth! and again, congratulations on your little one! did she come in time to be a 2004 tax deduction? ;)

ps--if you're not sure about using Catherine, you could also use Catherina/Katerina and call her Reena for short.
One other mn option for you is Eavan (pron EVE-een) that is Galic and means "little eve".
Catherine Eavan
I like Catherine Mary, and I actually think that alliterative names like Mary Mac____ sound nice. Also, as a "backup" name, Mary has LOTS of fun nns like Mamie (my personal fave)...though Mary is really become rather unusual -- I guarantee you that there will be more Ashlyn's, Mackenzie's, and Jadyn's in her classes than any Mary's!
Also, I don't know what your religious persuasion is, but it occured to me that being born on NYEve is still "Christmas" season and could signify Mary, mother of Christ. Another great "Christmas" name is Natalie, which was traditionally used for girls born around Christmas, particularly in December. I think Natalie Catherine sounds really good.
Anyway, I think Catherine Mary from your original list is a fantabulous choice. Lorna is NMS really, even though I like traditional/"old lady" names! :-) I also think Natalie Catherine is very nice and still has the time-of-year significane your family desires.
Let us know what you decide!!!

Catherine Eve or Catherine Eva are beautiful!
Catherine Hope...because of the hope of the new year?
Catherine Ivy
Catherine Neve ("snow")
Catherine Evangeline ("good news")
Catherine Christine/Catherine Christina (in honor of the Christmas season)
Catherine Emmanuelle ("God With Us")

I like the name Catherine but I can understand your reservations about it. Since she was born on NYE, why not call her Evelyn (with nn Eve or Evie) or perhaps Eva? Quite unusual names these days.
And congratulations on your baby girl! :)
