on GRACIE!!! We are bd and we have a boys name picked out. We talk about Will all the time but we can't talk about our girl the same way b/c we do not have a name picked out. I have lost so many names that I love b/c I didn't claim them out loud. I never cared that much before b/c we weren't trying but now we are and I really want a girls name claimed and decided on. I have a lot of friends that change their mind when pregnant but I don't want to be arguing on names when pregnant. Please Help.
Every name I suggest my DH says that is "okay." The only name he loves and keeps going back to is Gracie. I like it but think it is way overused now, but is it? All of the Grace's we know are double names and no one goes by Gracie. He thinks this a perfect "princess" name. (girly, sweet, classic, etc. - is what he means) I am also not sure how Gracie Watson flows either? WDYT? He doesn't like anything off the wall, and I do not like unisex names b/c I grew up w/ one. We definetly want a classic GIRL name. A name that everyone knows is girl and can spell. The only other name he warms up to is Livi. Again, Olivia is so popular at the moment but I do not here any Livi's!
Any suggestions? Thanks so much!!!

I'm Devanie's mom (nice to meet you LOL). The stress isn't quite the same as in Delaney ... that would make it de-VANE-ee, KWIM? Not quite as attractive. You'll have to forgive me, because I'm notoriously bad at trying to type out pronunciations, but it's more like DEV-an-ee or DEV-a-nee ... kind of like the name Devin with an "ee" sound at the end.

Thanks so much!!
We do get comments on how unique or uncommon Devanie's name is, but pronunciation isn't a problem for most people. Generally it's just a matter of repeating the name once -- no big deal. For example, we've had a handful of people initially think we'd said "Stephanie" -- an honest mistake in a loud, crowded room LOL -- but they usually get it right after that. Most people have heard the name Devin, so if they have trouble with it we simply remind them "like Devin + EE." ;)
Of course there are a handful of people who never get it right, but I think that's true of even the simplest name. The woman at our pediatrician's office never gets it right, usually going with de-VAIN-ee, but then she also calls our oldest dd Kaylie, Kyla, Kiera or some other random K name (her name's Kaitlyn, btw), so I'm thinking it's not the name that's the problem. LOL
To answer your other question, I happened upon the name when I was pregnant with her -- before we even knew she was a girl -- and fell in love with it. I did some research and actually found a few other Devanie's out there ... one of whom I've even become friends with since. LOL So it's certainly not unheard-of, but it is uncommon. ;)
Oh, and they also use a similar name (sounds VERY close, but spelled differently) for the little girl in The Notebook. We saw the movie on the way back from Punta Cana when I was eight or nine months pregnant with her, after we'd already chosen the name. Hormonal, hugely-pregnant mother that I was, I took it as a sign that we'd definitely found the perfect name for her. LOL

I was thinking of this post earlier today, when I was Christmas shopping with my mother. She was looking at that Dora "Knows your Name" doll, and would you believe she even "knows" Devanie?! Anyway, if you see the display in a store near you (I've seen them at Toys R Us and Walmart), you can just type in Devanie and hear it said aloud. Pretty cool. ;)
Thanks again for the compliments on her name.

Ps. You can never put too much thought into your child's name! After all, they're going to live with it forever, so a little extra effort is a great thing. Just think of it as your first gift to her. ;)
