DH and I are planning on TTCing in April and we already have the names picked out. The only problem is they aren't popular enough for me. For our DD Morgan we have lots of personalized items for her such as Chirtmas ornaments, keepsakes etc. I would like to do the same for the next child so I'm trying to convince everybody to use these names. LOL!

For a boy- Myles (310 in popularity for 2005

For a girl- Cora (It is an old name coming back but it was only like 420 in 2005)

Just thought I'd try- Amanda

Wow, I have to say this is a first for me. I've never heard of a parent who loves an unusual name HOPING others will use it. Usually they are lamenting undiscovered names that shot up in popularity after they used it.

One thing that might help -- would you consider spelling Myles Miles? Miles is the traditional (and hence more popular) spelling. It's ranked #210, so it's definitely more popular and it's been growing in popularity -- jumping up 10-20 spots on the chart every year since 1995. Also, one very popular trend right now is make a girls name by taking a popular boys name and change a vowel to a Y to make it more feminine. (eg Logyn, Jordyn, Aidyn). So if I saw a set of siblings name Morgan and Myles, I would actually assume Myles was a girl. Especially with the popularity of the show Hannah Montana -- featuring a character named Mylie. So by spelling it Miles you'd clear up the gender and be using the more popular spelling. (I'd say it's a fair bet that you'll be able to find personalized kid stuff with Miles on it if you look hard enough, but you'll never find Myles.)

Good luck!

Well I can't say I see the problem (I have a dd with a name not even IN the top 1000 ), but I know what you're saying.

To be quite honest, I wouldn't let the fact that they're not common enough to get personalized items worry you. I'm not familiar with your area, of course, but you can generally find stores that can personalize those exact same items (directly from the manufacturer) with any name, no matter how uncommon. We have one about two blocks from our home. ;) If you're not so lucky, you can find nearly any of these things online, either through small web retailers or through the actual manufacturers' sites (where you can often order the same products you see in stores with the name of your choice, since any given shop will only carry a limited supply of names ... even the popular ones tend to sell out!).

If it makes you feel better, I also have a dd named Kaitlyn (quite popular on paper, but the only Kindergartener in our school district with the name and only one of maybe three in the entire school, K through 12th). And guess what? There's a Cora in her teacher's AM class (equally popular ... even if it's only Kindergarten LOL). ;)

And if you really wish Myles were more popular, use the more common spelling -- Miles. It was 210 on the SSA list last year -- exactly 100 spots higher than the Y spelling!

I'd hate to see either name make it to the top 100. They are both really great names, and it would be a shame to see them overused.

You can always special order items with the baby's name painted on.

AJ, enjoying life with C.
