Definitely Alexandra.
There are so, so, so many Madelyns (various spellings) and Maddies (add the Madisons to that nn) out there that it's been overdone. That said, I would chose Madelyn a hundred times over Emerson, which is just an unattractive name, for boy or girl. There are so many better ways to "back into" the nickname Emmie, if that's what you are going for. Unless Emerson is a family name, it is just so trend-of-the-moment.

I agree with another post that mentioned the combo Madelyn Rae, only because it seems a bit too L-heavy when paired with the mn Elle. Oddly enough, I do think Emerson sounds like a girl name (I don't usually care for "unisex" names at all, but since I've only known girls with this name it's probably shaped my perception of it as stricly feminine), but I know I couldn't use it myself ... it's the name of my microwave! Like I said, I like the name in theory, but after seeing it a zillion times a day in my kitchen, it feels kind of like Sony or Whirlpool or any other brand name you wouldn't use for a child. Anyway, it's fine if it doesn't bother you, but just something you might want to be aware of (in case you didn't know about the brand or whatever). HTH!

I chose Alexandra because it is one of my favourite names, although Madelyn was a close second (but I agree Madelyn Rae sounds better). Where I live (in the UK), Emerson is strictly a boys name and I just can't get my head around it for a girl even though I know Terri Hatcher's daughter is called this.
Alex is a common nn for Alexandra but there are plenty of less common ones you could use e.g. Annie, Ally, Xandra, Andra, Andi etc.
Good Luck xxx
