Poet for a baby girl?
| Sat, 03-31-2007 - 12:52am |
So DH is DYING to name our baby girl Poet.. We both like uncommon names and he just won't stop with the name. I don't hate the name, I actually like the name, I just don't know if I like the name for MY daughter, KWIM?? Any opinions? and any suggestions for a middle name for it? I was thinking Poet Monroe?? TIA guys :)

I definitely see what you mean- Poet is a kind of nice idea for a name, but I would not name MY child Poet.
What is it that DH likes so much about Poet more than any other name? Maybe you could take those elements and find another name that you BOTH love.
FWIW, I would say do not use a name that you don't love personally. You could end up regretting it a lot.
As for a mn, I would go with a much more feminine mn than Monroe since Poet is not clearly male or female (IMO). The only exception to this would be if Monroe is an important family name to you (like your maiden name, for example).
Are there any family names that you could use as the mn? You could use your fn, or a variation of it for the mn.
Poet Anna
Poet Anneliese
Poet Annabel
Poet Anastasia
Poet Angeline
Poet Anise
Poet Annika
Poet Antonia
Good luck with your decision!
Liz
Thanks belle_petite for the siggy!
I think Poet could be cute on a little girl. Never really considered it before, but I probably would agree w/ pp about a more feminine mn.

Poet is along the same lines as Lyric as a name in my mind -- fine for a movie character, but not something I'd use for my own child. I wouldn't even mind it for someone else's child, assuming they'd used it because poetry/literature is an important aspect of their lives and not just because it was "a word that sounded pretty." LOL That just comes across as really corny, to be honest.
If it is the meaning of poet that he likes, perhaps he'd like an actual name with that same "poem/poet" meaning?
Deirbhile (jar/jer-villa)/Dervla/Devorgilla - means "daughter of a poet"
Devin/Devan/Devanie - one of the meanings often attributed to Devin is "poet," and Devanie is sometimes listed as an elaborated or diminutive form (though as a separate name it's actually related to "dark")
Kavita - "poem"
Teagan - "little poet"
Or, perhaps the actual name of a poet or from a poem?
Aminta - a play by a poet
Corinna - both the name of a poet and a woman another poet wrote about
Dylan - Dylan Thomas, of course ;)
Eliot - double poet/literature reference here, with both T.S. Eliot and George Eliot
Fiona - used by James Macpherson in "Fingal"
Grazyna (grah-ZHI-nah) - poem of the same name
Meredith - poet George Meredith
Niamh (NEEV or NEE-iv) - a bit different from those above. It means "radiance, brightness" and in Irish legend she runs away with the poet Oisin. ;)
Stella - means "star," which might also appeal to dh, and was used in Sir Philip Sidney's "Astrophel and Stella" (obviously )
Zona - for Zona Gale
The following are all names from poetry (many thought to have been created by the poet for that specific work). Thought I'd list them rather than explain each individually. ;)
Amaryllis
Beatrice
Claribel
Clarinda
Haidee
Layla
Lucasta
Lyudmila/Ludmila (lyood-MEE-la) - shortened form Mila is very sweet
Malvina
Myra
Serena
Nearly any of those seems more "uncommon" than Poet, especially with the popularity/trendiness of similar word names at the moment. ;)

This is only an opinion, of course, so take it for what it's worth, but Poet just seems trendy to me, along the lines of Sawyer, Cooper and all the other profession/occupation names that have caught on so much in recent years. And Poet Monroe sounds even trendier because Monroe is much like all the other surnames and esp. presidential surnames being used as first and middle names (Madison, Harrison, Jackson, Kennedy, Carter, etc.). So overall, while she would be the only Poet Monroe, her name would still be pretty trendy in the larger sense. If that doesn't bother you, that's one thing; but if you're seeking something unusual, in my mind, Poet Monroe doesn't fit that bill.
If your husband is really into poetry, does he have a favorite poet or poem from which a name could be derived?
Anyway, at the end of the day, go with your heart. If Poet works for both of you, so be it. If not, choose something you both like!
I like Poet, although I don’t think I would use it myself.
The main concern I see with the name Poet is it identifies your child with something she may not be into herself. Sort of like naming your child Sporty and then finding out they have no aptitude for sports.
The actress who played Punky Brewster, Soleil Moon Frye, had a baby girl in 2005 and named her Poet Sienna Rose.
It is the sound of the name or the meaning of the name that your DH likes so much? If it’s the meaning of the name then I’ll add to what a PP listed as names with a similar meaning and suggest:
Calliope- Muse of poetry
If you go with Poet I like the idea of using a more feminine mn, unless Monroe is a family name.

Thanks for all the replies and input!...We aren't into typical poetry but more into spoken word, and DH is really involved in indy style music. He wanted something along the lines of music or something that stood for creativity. He also liked Lyric but I wasn't thrilled with it. So, Poet is creative and unusual and he felt it fit the bill and I didn't HATE the name. I really just can't see myself naming her that, all day I've been trying to get the feel of it but we're going to have to find something we both love.
Btw..Funny about Soleil Moon Frye because I'm leaning towards Soleil also (DH isn't though)
Yes, it is best to find a name you both love. Try thinking about things you wouldn't normally think about finding names from-like songs your DH likes... any titles or artisits have names you'd like, or even the records (CD's)...were they produced by someone with a name you like, or were they from an Indy label with a name that sounds good to you?
I'd also suggest thinking about things with meaning for you both that may have a great memory for you and happens to have a name that ends up sounding like a name you'd want your child to have. My DH and I began our life together while living on a street called Wheeler Ave. We are seriously thinking about using the name Wheeler as a mn.
Finally, Some suggestions for names associated with music and sounds:
Aria- A beautiful melody.
Harmony
Melody
Amira- Hebrew “speech”
Echo
Harper- English “Harp Player”
Lirit – Hebrew “musical”
Good Luck!
