My husbands fathers name was Johnny. My husband wants to name our baby in remembrance of him. Either Johnny for a boy or Johni for a girl. I have finally talked him out of using it for a first name but he is adament about at least a middle name. The problem is that I really don't like it! :/

So are their any middle names that are similar but not exact...or maybe combos like Johnilyn??

Please help! :)

Allison
ps...my daughters name is Skye Ashlei

Well for a boy what about Johnathon or plain ole John. For a girl I have no idea IMO Johnilyn seems way to made up. Maybe Joanie/Joan..that might be to far off but its a start.

I always thought Johnna was a pretty name...maybe that would be a compromise?

This is why I really don't like naming a child after someone. What about your father? My BIL gave his son his fathers first name as a middle name because he had passed away many years before. I head my SIL's dad say do you have to be dead to have someone named after you. Some day he will have passed away too but his name will not be on a grandchild.

My son goes to school with a sweet girl named Johnna. I'm glad you dh agreed to use it as a middle name. I don't think that anyone should have to use a name they don't like, but at least you don't use a middle name very often.

I agree with the others. The names John/Johnna would still honor your father in law, but would be easier to blend with other names.

At the risk of sounding harsh, there are other ways to honor your FIL without using someone else's poor name choice.

You obviously don't like Johnny/Johni as a given name (and I don't blame you!), but as others have pointed out, John or a variant would still be naming the child "for" him. Even more so in your situation, since Johnny is generally used as a nn (and could therefore be considered a form of John, Jonathan, etc. anyway, so you have a few options here). You could use anything from John, Jonathan, Jack, Sean, Ian, Evan, Giovanni or Ivan for a boy or Johnna, Giana, Giovana, Jovana, Johanna, Joanna, Joan, Jeanne or Jane for a girl.

You have lots of choices (and all would honor "Johnny," so everyone's happy). ;)

Thank you! I am going to show this list to my DH because I like ALL of those names better than Johnny/Johni.. :) I've got about 5 months to talk him into something that I like too.

I didn't read thru the other responses

for a boy you could use Jonathan - or even spell it Johnathan

for a girl you could use something like Jonelle - but I don't like that with the H in it - Johnelle - but it's do-able

Jonna without the H looks ok - Johnna with the H - not so good

Jondra - hey, that'd be cute

good luck

You can always use similar names like John, Jon or Jonathan for a boy or Joan or Joni for a girl. If you don't like it as a first name you can use it for a middle name, as you mentioned. Or do the Harry S Truman thing and just give the letter J for a middle name! I think its great that you are honoring your DH's request to honor his father this way.
