How popular do you think the name Evelyn is going to become? I read a post awhile back and it said that it may be the next big name. That is exactly what my DH and I want to avoid. It's a family name so we would really like to use it but we would use our second choice if we knew it would become popular in a few years. I know that there's no way of knowing for sure. I read posts all the time that say "We named our daughted Emma etc. before we knew it would be so popular". We never want to be able to say that. By the way, our second choice is Ireland and I know for SURE it will never become popular! LOL My questions are. . Do you think we need to worry about Evelyn becoming popular? Should we go with Ireland instead to avoid this whole situation (we both love it too)?

I prefer Ireland over Evelyn. I'm not sure if Evelyn is going to be popular or not. It's not a name I'd consider so you don't have to worry about me naming my child that, lol. Stick with Ireland and then you won't have any worries. I have an Ethan and yes it is popular but not that popular. In his school of 150 kids (yes, small school) he's the only Ethan so it can't be that popular. But I can say 'If I knew it was going to be this popular I wouldn't have named him that' and I'm not proud to say that, either, so I can see where you're coming from. I would have named him Keethan or Kian or something similar. HTH!

Hey there,
There are 2 "Evie"'s at my daughter's school...? I think you should decide how important it is for you to honor this family member. Also, watch the local birth announcments, any Evelyn's?
Good Luck,

Hi there. Evelyn is a great name, but I completly understand your concern about the popularity issue. It was 80 something or other in 2004, & I do see it possibly jumping up a bit this year. I don't nessecerly think that it's going to be the next Emma or anything like that, but you might run into a couple throughout your child's school days & such. Another thing is that Evie names in general (Eva, Genevieve, etc.) are also becoming more widley used.

I'm sorry to sound like such a drag! I'm just trying to be honest, & I do think that Evelyn is a lovely name. You're right that Ireland is very unlikely to become popular. I think it sounds pretty, but Evelyn seems more substantial. Do you have a special connection to Ireland the country? If so, I think that Ireland would be okay. Evelyn seems more like a real name though.

My advice is, bring both to the hosptial, & see which one she looks like! If you're extreamly worried about Evelyn being somewhat common though, maybe you should just go w/Ireland.

Hope my rambling helped a bit. ;)

I definitely think this is going to be very popular. It fits the revived old favorites trend -- Emily, Sophie, Olivia, Hannah, Emma, etc.

And Ava/Eva is very popular right now. As that becomes more popular, people are going to be turning to similar-sounding alternatives like Evelyn and Evangeline so they can still use Eve/Evie as a nickname. I expect a reasonable jump this year (5-10 spaces) then bigger jumps over the next 2-3 years. I don't know that it will ever be top 10, but I'd be surprised if it didn't hit top 25.

It's a beautiful name. Personally I love it (and like it far better than any of the other similar names) but if you are worried about popularity, be wary. You could always use it as a middle name, then popularity wouldn't really be a factor. And I think Evelyn flows really nicely as a middle name with almost any first name.
