are you going to tell family and friends and ask what they think of the names?

I wouldn't suggest it...I have, but I have found that our mothers in particular and even some friends are very forceful with their opinions.

I really wouldn't suggest telling friends or family your choices until you're totally set on your names or know what you're having.

I wouldn't --- But that's because I KNOW that my mother and I have very different ideas when it comes to names ... And I know so many people who have gotten negative reactions to names they really loved.

It's like people think that because you tell them the name BEFORE the child is born - they have a right to comment on it.

When it comes to our girl's name, I don't ask. I inform and make it quite clear that this is what is. Of course, I only bring it up if asked nowadays because I think I told everyone when we were pregnant last time. With naming our son, we're less sold and will take input. I make that clear, too. And if people HATE a name we love but can't give a solid reason (ie, you realize that's slang for....; you had an ex-aunt named that--she killed your uncle...etc, etc, etc) it's all with a grain of salt. So far, so good. I generally find that, if you make your boundaries clear, people won't push them too much. It's when you're wishy-washy that you get problems. (At least with our families!)

"are you going to tell family and friends and ask what they think of the names?" -- No, DEFINITELY not.

Funny. I read this this morning and didn't respond (in a rush).
Today I was at my grandmother's house. We've discussed my list, and she's been nice about it. VERY nice. But that's Grammie for you!
My aunt was there and we got talking about names in general. I mentioned how even though I LOVE the name Ruby, I'd never use it (I have a Max - the TV show/books "Max and Ruby" ugh).
She responded by laughing her head off (seriously - head thrown back and all) and said "Oh, Cheri, you CAN'T be serious! That sounds like the ugliest little girl EVER" and then she followed that with:
"So what names are you thinking of?"
um.
yeah.
right.
Needless to say, I didn't discuss any other names with her! Yikes!

I don't like sharing with family and not too many friends either. We always get more people who don't like our names than people who do...and then you start to second guess yourself. So I just stick to either this board or my pregnancy friends board for advice.

It is so fun to keep it a secret.
