Today we found out we're expecting our 3rd in the spring :D :D :D

I started contributing to this board when I suspected I was pregnant, because my DH intends to take up an offer to work in the US next autumn, and I'd like to hear an American perspective on the names we like. So of the ones we're thinking of now, what is your immediate reaction? Are there any cultural references we should maybe steer clear of? Are they really far out there, or does being a uk/canada family excuse it?
We'd be living in Northern California, and my DH is Scottish, I'm canadian and english, and we currently live in ontario, canada.
Our elder two are Ewan and Isla- it's too late to change their names, but do say if there's something ppl might say about their names, too.

Eleanor Maude (known as Maude)
Winifred Ellen (Winnie)
Bridget Helen

Fergus Roger
Rory Douglas
Duncan Alexander

Thanks!

Hi there, Siena. Oh my gosh...I love Ewan & Isla!!! Fabulous job there. Here are my thoughts on the list for #3-

Eleanor Maude (known as Maude)-I would have to say that Eleanor Maude is nms, but it is classy & different. I love the nn Ellie though. However, if you want to call her Maude, why not just Maude Eleanor?

Winifred Ellen (Winnie)-Aww. That is so down to earth & humble sounding. I don't know why, but it was just my immediate reaction to Winifred Ellen. Winnie is a cute & spunky nn for it too. I like it a lot.

Bridget Helen -I love Bridget! This is my favourite from your list by far, & it's definitly the best w/Ewan & Isla too being that it's Gaelicish. Helen is nms, but Bridget Ellen would be lovely.

Fergus Roger -I really feel like Fergus is a name that I should like, but just could never get into it. It may be percieved sort of "geeky" in the States, but I could be wrong.

Rory Douglas -Ooh, that's wonderful. I love that it's four letters & Gaelic just like Ewan & Isla. Perfect.

Duncan Alexander-Duncan is adorable. I'd perfer Duncan Roger though, due to the repetitive D sound in Duncan AlexanDer (geez, I'm picky), but Duncan is still a great name. Yet Rory is my favourite from the list.

Hope this helps!

P.S.-I'd like to invite you to come over to the 'Baby Names: Beyond the Trends" board. I bet you a lot of the posters there will ooh & ahh over your childrens' names like I did, hehe.

I think Bridget and Duncan are both good names. As far as Maude, Winnie, and Fergus, I say definitely no. For Rory, it's a maybe. Maude, Winnie, and Fergus just sound too Old English or something to me. They'd probably get teased a lot in school.

I like all of your names - they all fit in with the current trend to name the baby something old fashioned (Abigail, Amelia, etc.) but are each distinctive and uncommon.

Duncan is my favorite boys name and will be our boys name if we ever have one! My husband is of mostly Scottish heritage and our last name is very Scottish! I am part Scottish, Welsh, and German so I love the Scottish/English names. I really like Winnie for a girl. I like Eleanor but Maude is not popular here in the U.S. It is more an old lady name here. Obviously for a boy I like Duncan but Rory is cute too! I really like Ewan but we can't use it because our last name is McIlvain and that is too much of a mouthful! Good luck!

Honestly? For a girl, I like Winifred best. Not Winfred but actually Winnie. It's very cute:) Bridget and Maude are very un-flattering girl names, to me at least:( Maude sounds like a name of an old woman. Anyhoo...

And I don't like any of your boy options but I have bad association with those names, Rory especially.

With that said, I don't really think they are too far out here and no weird name associations I can think of. I mean, they sound a lot nicer to me than say, Apple or Pilot Inspecktor!!

And your dd's name, Isla, is so very pretty:)
