What does everyone think of the name Reese? I love it, but I wonder if everyone will only connect the actress Reese Witherspoon with it.

Thanks!

I love the actress Reese Witherspoon so yes, that is what I think of when I hear the name Reese. I think it is a nice name though, and would work well as a middle name too!

Yes, Reese Witherspoon is very cute. However, everybody thinks this. In the past few months, I have seen baby girl Reeses popping up a whole lot. Beware of popularity! I prefer it for a boy anyway.

I love Reese as a nickname for Theresa, but I don't really care for it on its own. I just think it sounds like a nickname.

I think Reese is adorable. I wouldn't worry about everyone thinking of Reese Witherspoon when they hear it. That is definitely not a bad thing. I would use it!

Since Reese/Reece/Rhys is a traditional boys' name I would not think anything of the name being used on a boy, other than, "What a nice name." If, however, I heard it on girl I would instantly think of Reese Witherspoon and what a trendy name it is for a girl.

I really like the name Reese. Who cares if people think of Reese Witherspoon. If you were to name your dd that, she would most definitely make the name her OWN!

In your opinion, is trendy bad? I am still trying to decide if the "trendy" connotation is really a bad thing. Jennifer was trendy in our day, and it is still a pretty name today. What is your opinion?

Thanks for the input!

Thanks for the opinion! I think you're right. It's going on my LONG list and just might make the SHORT one!

I'm not sure if you're considering Reese for a boy or a girl, but to answer your first question, I do like it a lot for a boy (although I prefer the spelling Rhys), and it's not bad as a nn for Therese or Theresa for a girl, but I would never use it as a given name. Kind of like naming a girl Charlie instead of using it as a nn for something traditionally feminine, like Charlotte, KWIM?

As to the Reese Witherspoon association -- on a boy, I wouldn't really relate the two, especially if you were to use the more traditional spelling. For a girl, on the other hand, I think this would be unavoidable. After all, Reese didn't even appear in the top 1000 names for girls until 2000 or so -- about the time Ms. Witherspoon was becoming popular -- and has since moved up each year, jumping to the 230s last year. So yes, I do think most would associate the name with the actress, making it appear quite trendy and rather dated once the trend fizzles out. Plus, as a pp mentioned, this is actually her mother's maiden name, so while it obviously has meaning for her family, everyone else is just latching onto the latest trend.

So in short ... great for a boy, not so much for a girl (and yes, a girl will get the Reese Witherspoon connection).

HTH ;)

I would definately use Reece/Rhys for a boy. I really like the name and wouldn't let the association with Reece Witherspoon stop me from using it. I think it will remain more of a boys name, anyway I hope it does. I don't like it for a girl.
