Rory for a girl...

Hello again!

My DH is at the point where he won't even discuss baby names anymore (not necessarily a bad thing, since we end up arguing most of the time we do). I don't know what I'd do without this board!

Our first daughter is Cassidy Drew. We're having another girl, and our "list" (if you can call it that) includes two names: Jillian Kate - which I adore and DH used to love, but he's getting colder about it all the time, and Victoria Kate, called Rory most of the time - this name is a compromise (DH LOVES Rory and wanted to just use that, I insisted on a full name - neither of us liked Aurora and I couldn't sway DH on Georgia), but I'm not 100% in love with it.

My question is this: what is your first association when you hear the name Rory? Do you think girl? boy? unisex? And does Gilmore Girls come to mind right away? I really want to avoid a "pop culture" type name. I'm just trying to feel out the name and the kind of personality it has, KWIM?

Thank you!

ETA: Sorry, I should have posted this in the Girls section!

Also ETA: Does Victoria fit with Cassidy in style at all? It seems like a stretch to me...

Hi there,

I hate to say this, but the name Rory for a girl immediately makes me think of "Gilmore Girls" - outside that show I have never heard Rory for a girl, even though I've known a number of boy Rorys. Aside from Gilmore Girls Rory (who I always found to be somewhat of a simpering idiot) I'm not really crazy about the name anyway, and thank goodness you didn't say it was going to be short for Lorelai because then I would have just rolled my eyes and not even responded to this post.

Victoria is a very pretty name, I like the nickname Tori (or Torey or Tory) better than Rory. It doesn't exactly fit with Cassidy but it's not crazy mismatched either. It's not like your kids are named MacKenzie and Ethel.

That said, I love the name Jillian! I'm sorry your DH is tired of it, because I have not known many Jillians and to me it's a very fresh and pretty name. Stick with it! Maybe everyone else will write in that Rory is the best name ever, but if I met a little girl named Rory I'd go, "Geez, her mom must have really loved Gilmore Girls."

Good luck!

Tracy

the only girl named Rory I've ever known of was Rory Kennedy (of the major Kennedy family) - I've never come across one personally

I always think of Rory for a boy, have known several boys named that over the years, know one my age even (51) and another who is about 22 or 23.

While Cassidy and Victoria are a little different in style, Victoria being much more classic/traditional - I think Tori would be a better nickname for it - Tori is pretty much unisex, but I only girls named or nick-named Tori

good luck

Well I definitely like Rory and I like both full names with the nn. I do like Victoria, but it seems a little more sophisticated than Cassidy. But if you are stuck on having them being somewhat matching names, then I wouldn't worry about that. Especially since Rory and Cassidy are cute together. Does Cassidy have a nn? I wouldn't worry about the Gilmore Girls thing either, b/c Rory is still a pretty original name that you don't hear often.

If you use Jillian Kate - will you call her by her full name, I might have missed that part in you message LOL!

Thanks for the response! Your comment about MacKenzie and Ethel made me giggle - it puts things into perspective.

I appreciate your opinion - I really don't want to go with Rory at all if most people will hear her name and think Gilmore Girls. I don't like the character Rory at all, and don't want people to associate my daughter with her. That's where my DH got the name - he had never heard Rory on a girl (he has a close guy friend named Rory, oddly, this doesn't bother him) before Gilmore Girls.

I'm really hoping DH will come back around to Jillian, but that's looking less likely all the time. And as important as a baby's name is, I think it's more important her parents are still married... ;)

I've never heard of Rory Kennedy - I may have to Google her. Rory does seem to be more common for boys than girls - it was number 867 (or somewhere around there) on the SSA list for 2006 for boys, and didn't make the list for girls. Because of Gilmore Girls, I'm kind of surprised by that.

I prefer Tori as a nickname to Victoria, too, but DH won't even consider it. The only reason we would even be using Victoria is so DH could have the name he loves (Rory) and I could have an alternative to just Rory.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the feedback. Cassidy goes by Cassy a lot, and we also use her middle name all the time (we call her Cassy Drew or Cassidy Drew almost as much as just using her first name). I should mention that both Drew and Kate are family names (well, Andrew and Katherine are the actual names, but we've chosen these to honor them), and I love them. It will be the same with this girl - we'll

Hi there -
I think Rory Kate and Cassidy Drew are a fantastic match. I'm in New England, so I first think Rory Kennedy...but then Gilmore Girls. I've only known one male Rory in my life -- he's now in his 30s -- and one little girl named Rory. Victoria and Cassidy are two different styles, but if you love Victoria, then it shouldn't matter. Sisters are not socks -- they really don't need to completely match. :)

I also love Jillian Kate.

I fear that I'm not really helping you here!

Thanks for the feedback - any and all is appreciated! It's good to hear some positive reactions to the name Rory, especially because I'm so unsure on it. I do think Rory works with Cassidy - Victoria less so, but I want her to have options if she doesn't always want to be called Rory. And I like the sound of Rory Kate together, or at least I think I do.

For those who have named their children a more formal name and called them by their nickname almost 100% of the time, what did you put on the birth announcements? I'm trying to figure that one out, too, because I want everyone to know we're calling her Rory, and not Victoria... and we will be sending out a bunch of birth annoucements to friends and extended family. Would I just put Rory, or maybe Victoria with Rory in brackets?

My friend did this with her daughter Elizabeth nn Ellie. I'm going to try to explain it as best I can:

Imagine this card:
A sage/pink floral border on the top of the notecard (just a flat card)
Beneath that: "We welcome with love" in small pink font
Beneath that: "ELLIE" in caps, a larger font, sage green
Beneath that: "Elizabeth Paige Smith" in the smaller pink font
Beneath that: "October 6, 2005" in the same, smaller pink font
Beneath that: "7 pounds, 20 inches" in the same, smaller pink font
Beneath that: "Proud parents, Carolyn and Michael" in small font, sage green

Does that make sense?

That makes a lot of sense. If we do go with Rory, I will totally follow that format. Thanks a million!
