Rory for a girl...

Hello again!

My DH is at the point where he won't even discuss baby names anymore (not necessarily a bad thing, since we end up arguing most of the time we do). I don't know what I'd do without this board!

Our first daughter is Cassidy Drew. We're having another girl, and our "list" (if you can call it that) includes two names: Jillian Kate - which I adore and DH used to love, but he's getting colder about it all the time, and Victoria Kate, called Rory most of the time - this name is a compromise (DH LOVES Rory and wanted to just use that, I insisted on a full name - neither of us liked Aurora and I couldn't sway DH on Georgia), but I'm not 100% in love with it.

My question is this: what is your first association when you hear the name Rory? Do you think girl? boy? unisex? And does Gilmore Girls come to mind right away? I really want to avoid a "pop culture" type name. I'm just trying to feel out the name and the kind of personality it has, KWIM?

Thank you!

ETA: Sorry, I should have posted this in the Girls section!

Also ETA: Does Victoria fit with Cassidy in style at all? It seems like a stretch to me...

I love the name Rory!! I do think of the Gilmore Girls, but I've loved the name for so long that it just doesn't matter to me...

I do think that Cassie and Rory are great names for siblings, too

Rory does make me think of Gilmore Girls BUT that show is over now and in a few years, not many people will make that connection anymore (only die hard fans). I love the name - I think it's great!

I think Rory Kate is adorable. I have NEVER watched a full episode of the Gilmore Girls so it isn't that strong of reaction for me personally, but I do know a lot of people that do watch it. What about using Rory as a nn for Elora? That was on my list while pregnant with DD, and what is really funny is Kate is a family name for us as well (DH's Grandma is Kathleen and goes by Kay). If I ever had a third child (which WE ARE NOT) and it was girl her mn would be Kate. Anyway I also met a little red headed Rory (girl) at a b-day party and have really liked it for a girl ever sense. Good luck!

Thanks for the response - hearing that others don't think it's too "out there" or too Gilmore Girls is helpful. And the more I think about it, the more I could see Rory with Cassy, perhaps more so than Jillian.

You make a good point about the show being done. I hadn't really considered that, but I guess Gilmore Girls would be completely before this baby's time. So the association would (hopefully) fade quickly. Definately something to consider...

I like Elora - I'm not sure I could sell DH on it, but I could try. :) Thanks for the feedback.

Pop culture arrives and fades quickly - Samantha wasn't ruined because of "Bewitched" for example.

OK, I have never seen the Gilmore Girls. But I like Rory. Rory Kennedy, BTW, was the one who was getting married when her cousin JFK Jr. died en route to her wedding. I believe she is an author and filmmaker. Anyway...

When my DD Caroline was born, we were living in NYC. This was 1998, and there was a show called "Caroline in the City." Yes, people mentioned it: "Hey, Caroline in the city! Ha ha!" But I knew that the show would disappear from TV and from peoples' minds and it completely has!

I do prefer Jillian, though, and Jilly Kate is adorable.

One more thing: I prefer on the announcement to have the formal name first and then the nickname: Elizabeth Hanes Peterson with "Erin" underneath it.
