Rory for a girl...

Hello again!

My DH is at the point where he won't even discuss baby names anymore (not necessarily a bad thing, since we end up arguing most of the time we do). I don't know what I'd do without this board!

Our first daughter is Cassidy Drew. We're having another girl, and our "list" (if you can call it that) includes two names: Jillian Kate - which I adore and DH used to love, but he's getting colder about it all the time, and Victoria Kate, called Rory most of the time - this name is a compromise (DH LOVES Rory and wanted to just use that, I insisted on a full name - neither of us liked Aurora and I couldn't sway DH on Georgia), but I'm not 100% in love with it.

My question is this: what is your first association when you hear the name Rory? Do you think girl? boy? unisex? And does Gilmore Girls come to mind right away? I really want to avoid a "pop culture" type name. I'm just trying to feel out the name and the kind of personality it has, KWIM?

Thank you!

ETA: Sorry, I should have posted this in the Girls section!

Also ETA: Does Victoria fit with Cassidy in style at all? It seems like a stretch to me...

I'll admit, if I heard "Cassidy and Rory," I'd probably assume that Rory was the brother. But I like it as a nn for Victoria, or maybe Aurora or Cordelia or Rowan.

I am not a fan of Victoria for some reason. I think Georgia is such a classic and you don't hear it very often, so it really stands out to me. I think it works on little girls and adults too. I really like both Rory and Georgia, and they both sound cute with Cassidy. Which one sounds better with your last name? That is how we decided on our DDs name...Good luck getting DH on your side, I know how hard that can be. hahaha - Tara

Thanks for the feedback. I think so, too - can you convince my hubby? ;)

Thanks. Rory seems more masculine to me, too, so that's why I'm really hoping to just use it as a nn.

It can be so hard to find "the name" that you both love. I like Rory, and yes I think Gilmore Girls even though I don't watch it. I know a boy Rory and two girls named Rory, actually their given names are Rose and Rowan with the nn Rory. I think Cassy and Rory go great. Victoria doesn't match in style with Cassidy really but their nn match well so day to day wouldn't worry about it if you love Victoria.

I'm not even sure if "the name" that both DH and I love exists - I'm hoping for a workable compromise...

I think I'm okay with the Gilmore Girls connection now. And I'm glad everyone seems to think Cassidy and Rory sound good together. If I can convince DH that Georgia nn Rory is the way to go, I think I'll get him to sign something making it legally binding, so he can't change his mind! ;)

I wouldn't say it fades quickly...I mean, how many of us would use Elmo, Kermit, Garfield, etc for our sons, even though they were all respectible (but uncommon) names before being attached to fictional animals? And Samantha wasn't ruined because it was a common name before the show...the trick is whether a name was common or uncommon before showing up on a pop culture phenomenon. Take "Friends" for instance...Rachel or Joseph doesn't make you automatically think of it; Chandler or Phoebe probably does (and probably will for our generation until we're taking our Cream of Wheat with Splenda on the side.)

I think cartoon characters are more "branded" with their names than just names off a TV sitcome, but I could be wrong. I do agree with what you're saying, though. If a popular name was used on a show, people wouldn't automatically think of the show when they heard the name, whereas if the name was uncommon, it would be more linked just to that one character...

I'm still on the fence a little with Rory, but if DH agrees to Georgia, I'm sold. I'm quite convinced she would end up being called Georgia more than Rory in the long run, anyway. If it still comes down to DH insisting on just Rory or Victoria nn Rory, I'm not sure I'll go with it.

I've been meaning to say, I love Georgia...it's just a gorgeous name. It's even one I'd like to use, except DH has a friend named George and while he means well, he's just not quite the guy I want to have think I named my daughter after him, if that makes sense. But it's a gorgeous name and a great way for both of you to get something you like!
