Same name, but not...WDYT?

Soooooooo, as you all know, I'm frantically thinking about boy's names!

DH's cousin has a son named Eli. BUT, they use the Hebrew pronunciation (so it sounds like 'elly'). AND they live in Guelph (it would take about 25 hours to drive there). Far away enough that even though Eli is 1 and a half, we've never met him.

...but...DH has only 2 cousins...

So: would it be weird if we named this baby Eli (and pronounced it ee-lie)? What's your opinion?

It sure does fit our requirements: Hebrew, but not aggressively so, un-nickname-able, easy to spell and pronounce. Goes well with Caplan (my kids' last name, not mine)...

Eli is a great fit in your family! For me, it would depend on how often you are in any kind of contact with the other family. I wouldn't generally encourage the use of the same name, but given the distance and the different pronunciation, I think Eli warrants your strong consideration.

Best wishes!

I am personally not a fan of using the same name within families. Personal bias - my dad's cousin gave his daughter the same name as me, and it's always been a little annoying to me. :)

Yeah, my family is rife with name repetition: I have a sister Joan, and an aunt Joan. A cousin Robert, and an uncle Robert. An aunt Monica, first cousin Monica AND second cousin Monica. I could go on.
BUT, we are very far away from each other and rarely see/communicate with each other.
I just don't know...it's weird.

So is my family now that I think of it --

Two Michaels
Two Lindas
Two Tamaras (yeah, can you believe it?)
Two Amys
Three James
Soon to be two Janets if my cousin gets married

Some are by marriage, so couldn't be helped, but it's all very confusing. :)

My opinion is to use the name that you love. It is very far from a big deal to have cousins with the same name. My family has quite a number of unique, even far-out names, but on the OTHER hand we also have numerous duplicates, triplicates, quadruplicates of more common names like Michael, Thomas and John. We do have same-name cousins, and no one -- not the kids, not the adults -- has an issue with it or gets confused. If someone is not certain which John Grandma means, s/he just says: Do you mean John Smith or John Jones? And all is clarified. Takes two seconds. In your case, it wouldn't even take two seconds, since the names are pronounced differently. So, if Eli is the name you love, I think you should use it! If you love something else more, use the one you love best!

If you love Eli, definitely go for it. Since they live far away and they're pron. differently, I don't think it's that big of a deal.

It kind of bothers me that Max and Eli are both so short while Solomon is longer, but I am kinda weird like that. I'd like something 2 syllables the best, like Elias, but I know how you feel about nn's! Overall, I think Eli is a nice choice.

If it were me, I would be okay with it since it's not someone you see on a regular basis.

I feel it is too close, and could cause some confusion if the two boys were every together. What about Levi? Sounds similar to Eli (ee-lie), but not as close to Eli (Elly)

hello!! personally-i dont like it-but if you do, i would use it. your dh's cousin lives so far away-i dont see there being a problem. max, solomon and eli sound okay together-but like i said, eli isnt my style...i do like elijah as opposed to eli and isaac would fit your criteria of being hebrew and not nickname-able. just a few thoughts...
