I lost my grandmother when I was 6 and I've been trying really hard to find a girl name that would honor her. Her name was Mary Gene, which does not leave me a lot to work with. I'd thought of Merren/Maryn and other names tagged along with Mary, but it just didn't do it for me.
About a month ago, DH and I heard the name Mabry (May-Bree). We both liked it (which never happens), so I put it on the name list in the back of my head. The other night I was just laying in bed and I thought to myself, "Wait a minute! Mabry minus the b is Mary" It kinda gives me chills, but I'm taking it as a sign.
Does this work in honoring my grandmother and can you help me think of any combo's??
Thanks for any help!

First off, Mabry is adorable! I like!
Secondly, some combo's that popped into my head...
Mabry Elaine
Mabry Josephine "MJ"
Mabry Elise
Mabry Catherine
Mabry Noelle
Mabry Jean*
Mabry Ellen
Mabry Ruth
Thinking you should go with a classic middle name since Mabry seems up-beat and hip:)
I think it works well- great choice!

Still not that into Mabry, but I certainly can see how you might associate it with Mary, being only one letter off. I'd try to do a twist on Gene for her mn as well, since you're not using her exact name anywhere. Mabry Genevieve, Mabry Imogene or Imogen, Mabry Eugenia or Mabry Jane (technically a form of Jean, but Gene usually being masculine, figured it a decent switch). Something like that would be a neat connection and more obvious nod to your grandmother, KWIM? ;)
FWIW, if you don't end up going with Mabry, there are literally dozens of translations of Mary. Probably more than any other name -- short of John, perhaps LOL -- so it's hard to believe you don't have a lot to work with there. I

I just wanted to say I agree with Kelli. Mabry really isn't my style, mostly because I always hear it as "Mayberry," which reminds me of The Andy Griffith Show. A few people seem to really love it, though...I remember someone else on here having it on their list.
I'd personally go with another variation of Mary: Maire, Moira, Maureen, Mariah, Marion, Maura.
Also reiterating that there are just as many different forms of Gene you can use: Jane, Jean, Jeanette, Janelle, Janet, Janice/Janis. There are others, but those are the ones that come readily to mind.
Big Mabry fan here! I've been waiting to meet a real one for years!
Go for it!

Soma, we think so much alike. LOL I immediately think of "Mayberry," followed closely by "maybe" (though that one may be more thanks to the previous threads on the name). I figured "Mayberry" was just me, though. Glad to know I'm not the only one.
To the OP: Not terrible things in the least, so please don't get the wrong idea here, but these are actually GOOD things to know going in. That way, if someone assumes you've said her name is either of the above, you can simply laugh and shrug it off rather than being caught completely off-guard (or worse, second-guessing your name choice after the fact, when it's too late to do anything about it if something like that would dissuade you, KWIM?). Always best to have all the info before making a final decision. ;)

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I don't think of Mayberry when I hear it and I just absolutely love the name. DH loving it just solidifies it for me.
As far as a middle name goes, I think I'd like a one syllable name, unless I found something else I liked. It just fits with Hanna and Grant's name. Ex. Hanna Kate, Grant Walker. I'm not a fan of the Grace, Faith, Hope trend, so none of those please.
Thanks again to everyone for your help!
Well, Mabry Gene/Jean, Joan
