I think it's a lovely name. Plus there are nn options like Serena and Sara (or Sera). Though I think just Serenity is nicer.

I know someone who named her daughter Serenity and ended up with a somewhat strong willed child. The mother has always said that she doesn't care how non-serene the child sounds, she named her Serenity because she wanted her to have serenity of spirit and this particular child has to be very vocal to be happy. That has always seemed to me to be a well thought out answer to people who love to point out how the name might not fit a child's personality.

I don't like it-- word names are not my style. I once knew a girl named Silence and she was perhaps the loudest child EVER. I think children with word names often work against them.

I want to love Serenity, because I'm a huge Joss Whedon fan, and I loved Firefly.

Unfortunately, most people will immediately think of Serenity pads for urinary incontinence. A bully couldn't ask for an easier target. I wouldn't use it.

I know 2 girls named Serenity. One we call Ren. It's a nice name. It goes along with the whole Destiny and Trinity craze. I still can't help to think about adult diapers.

I grew up with a girl named Serenity, and while it might seem a nice name in theory, she was teased a LOT about the incontinence pads (called ridiculous things like "pad girl," "diaper," etc. and being taunted about having "potty problems," if you KWIM).

If it's the sound of the name he likes, maybe Serena or Serenna would appeal (also mean serene). There's also Seren (meaning star), Felicity, Verity and Amity, if that's the type of name you're looking for (Felicity is particularly nice, FWIW). ;)

Others with "calm/serene/peace" meanings include Malie, Galina, Placida, Shanta/Shanti, Irene (ee-RE-nu pron. is pretty), Mirna/Mira, Pax and Salome.

ETA: Serafina! My dd has a Serafina, nn Seri (sar-ee), in her class. Sera would also work as a nn.

I really dislike it. It is one of those names that just has a trashy feel to it. Don't mean to be rude, but thought you should know what other people will think before you choose it.

Its weird we have subconsiosly picked all the nams we like from show of his. We talk about the name and then realize that is from one of joss' shows.

I am not a huge fan of names that are items or meanings.

He has it stuck in his head that he wants this name and we have had no luck in deciding on a name

I've only seen the movie, but what about River, Zoe or Inara? I actually like Inara quite a bit ... similar to a few others I've had on my list at one point or another. Just a thought!

I don't like Serenity for a name. Honestly, I think it sounds like y'all are trying too hard to come up with a "different" name that fits with the current fad for "different" names. I'd say stick with a classic that has a similiar sound or meaning or if you must have a word name, choose one that won't paint a bulls-eye on your daughter for every bully that comes through the school yard.
