Sibling for Blake!
| Wed, 01-02-2008 - 4:50pm |
I need a name for a sibling to my son Blake. My husband and I do not agree on ANYTHING.
I love classic, strong and somewhat "simple" names that don't break down into nicknames. I am very anti-nickname. I definitely don't want names that are in the top 50 most popular. And I tend to lean more towards one or two syllable names.... anything more than that is just a really long name that can be broken down into a nickname!!

I'm not sure of the popularity of this name but it's old....Jack or Russell, which I guess could be broken down to Russ, so maybe instead, Ross.
Camden
Palmer
Julie
Lisbeth (not elizabeth, but l-is-beth)
Cadence
Lyla
Ava (definitely becoming more popular though)
Deacon
I'm not sure, I'm running out of names that can't be shortened....
Courtney
Nicole (could be nikki, but most nicoles I know are straight Nicoles and have always and will always be nicoles)
Kate (not katherine, or katie, which I hate, but Kate)
Jason
Aaron
Erik
Luke
Maybe that will help....I tried :)

I'm a short name person, too, so this is right up my alley. Iris is my favorite from your girls' list (you hardly hear it and it's simply elegant.) Mason is relatively popular in our neck of the woods--pretty sure it's towards the top of the Social Security list; Brody isn't common, but I'm inclined to find it too cute with Blake. (But it does conjure up the oh-so-yummy Adrien Brody.) Let's see what else comes to mind:
Dove
Fern
Fiona
Gemma
Alair
Mary
Graeme/Graham
Hoyt
Rafe
Keir
Nolan
Truitt
Quinn
Thanks everyone for the suggestions - keep them coming!
I especially love the following:
Jack - But a no-go. This
My name is Paige and my brother is Dion because my parents had the same view on nicknames as you.
Due to this people insist on calling my Paigey (which I loathe!) and my brother gets Deaka. I find a lot of people around me with one syllable names get their name lengthened rather than shortened to nn it eg Brookey or Brooka, Paigey. So please dont think as my parents did that it wont be able to be made into a nn.
The other thing you could possible do is what I did for my daughter and choose a name that you can accept the nn of. I chose Anthya (traditionally spelled Anthea) that is shortnened to Thya which I can tolerate, even thought I'm not a huge fan of nn.
My debutante partner was named Blake and his brother's name was Kane. He didn't have any sisters.
Good luck with the naming.
