Hello! My name is Andrea and I have been lurking on this board since September. I finally activated my account and was hoping for some advice! I am PG with with my first due 5-15-06. We just found out that we are having a boy! We FINALLY have agreed on a name and I just wanted some input. Skyler Nicholas Olson. Nicholas is DH's name. In the baby book it meant "protector". What do you think?

TIA!
Andrea

Personally, I think of it as a girl's name. I'm sure others will disagree though. I've only heard it on girls. I've like the name since seeing it (Schuyler) in the credits of Anne of Green Gables. Also, there is a female named Skylar in Good Will Hunting.

I know there are some that use it as a boys name, but when I hear it, I automatically think its a girl. I know several Sklar/Skyler's and they are all girls. I think its going to be a 50/50 split though, as there are many that think of it as a boys name!

I love using Dh's name as the middle name though!

I've often contemplated that name for a girl. And I've always heard girls named Skyler, even though I heard it is a unisex name.

I'm more a fan of a girl named Skyler than a boy.

Congrats on your little boy! I think that Skyler Nicholas is a great name, but may I suggest spelling it Schuylar? That's actually the correct spelling. It's very handsome.

I guess it depends on the region where you live or something, because every Skyler that I know is a boy. So of course I consider it a boy's name! Congrats on the baby boy!

I like Nicholas, but Skyler just seems really feminine to me, sorry.

I won't be much help, but since you said you wanted opinions, I have to say Skyler is not attractive to me at all. As others have mentioned, there are a lot of girls named this lately (and I hate when people do that, so that's not a reflection on the name itself). However, I just don't really like the name in general. It just doesn't sound like a name to me. Actually, it always makes me think of the phrase "The sky is falling!" So now I just picture Chicken Little from the recent children's movie (little guy, glasses ... KWIM?). If that's an appealing image for you, go for it. Just nms. Sorry. :(

Hi Andrea!

First off, congratulations!

I work in preschool, and there have been two skylers in the last little while- Skylar, a girl, and Schuyler, a boy. Nobody's going to be too surprised at a little boy named Skyler, even if I/they don't particularly like it:P I think what puts me off is the feminine-to-my-ears nn Sky. Having said that, I love the name Rory for a boy, but a friend had a baby boy in November and beat me to it- when I posted that name here, lots of people said 'girl,' though, too. The thing about the Schuyler spelling is that, while it's more masculine, it's tough to pronounce and might be a little odd if you're not Dutch or German-plus I think it means "scholar" rather than "protector."

Just one little point: the initials are SNO. Snowball? It's not as bad as, say, Alexander Scott Smith, or Fiona Ursula King, but I though I'd point it out, just in case.

If it's THE name, and you love love love it, ignore us all. Obviously.

-Si

Other names which mean 'protector': Edmund, Eamon (irish, pron. AY-mon), Raymond, Ramon, Redmund/Redmond, Reimund.

Other names that end in -er, or that came to mind: Dexter, Sawyer, Parker, Walker, Tucker, Archer, Fletcher, Porter, Turner, Tanner, Cooper, Carter, Foster, Hunter, Miller, Ryder, Spencer, Baxter, Fraser, Barclay, Brock, Davis, Ellis, Elliot, Finlay, Finn, Hardy, Keane, Reid, Merrick, Ramsey, Tate, Wyatt.

I like Skyler a lot. I like it for boys, but not for girls. Just be aware it is somewhat unisex and you will run into a few girls with it here and there

mostly I usually don't like any names that are known to be unisex, but I do like Skyler, and only for a boy.

good luck
