to make them look unique. Misspelling a name just makes the parents look like they can't spell. Not to mention that others will always misspell the child's name. GRRR!!!

I agree, taking a common name and changing the spelling does not make in unique. Just makes people mispell it.

I'm not sure if i agree. my middle name is Audry. that's how it apears on my birth certificate and i was named after a family friend who also spelled her name that way. I know the traditional spelling is Audrey but i like my name the way it is. if you think my name looks strange then boo hoo to you. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. if i like a slightly different spelling for my child's name to honor a friend or a family member than i'm going to use it. and anyone who has to read it can just deal.

I'm torn. I mean as long as its not too ridiculous, that you're not sure what you are looking at. I enjoy a changed letter or two, it gives it character especially if its a very common name. ie. Katie, or Caty. Well, which "katie" are we talking about? Oh, the "Katie" with a "Y" or "C". Growing up with a popular name, i wish my mother would have put a twist on it. IMO.

I completely agree with you Tiffany, and with Cara.....what is the "correct" spelling of any name....every name in the baby name book has different spellings and I dont see anywhere where one is more "correct" than the other....I also have a name spelled the unusual way, and I have always been proud of that fact....I will name my daughter something beautiful, but it will not be spelled like everyone's name that's out there...Traci (not the normal Tracy)

Okay for me ..I think it is a bit odd when someone says they want to use an usual name and someone suggests a name like Jayne. That is not an unusual name but an unusual spelling and there is a big difference.
Just my 2 cents.

Well, my name is spelled Kelli (with an I, not a Y), and I've always liked that, but I'm pretty sure that's not what the original post was referring to. After all, there are often various acceptable and recognized spellings of a name (such as Kelly, Kellie or Kelli, in my case). I mean, there's "unique" or "different," and then there's completely made-up and incorrect. For example, Jezzukah for Jessica, Abbeyegayle for Abigail, Maddissyn for Madison, etc. (these are off the top of my head, but I have seen ones at least as bad as these). Oh, and as long as we're on the topic ... Neveah for Nevaeh (which is too trendy and made-up in my opinion anyway, but it really drives me nuts that it's supposed to be "heaven spelled backwards" but tons of people using it would actually be inverting haeven. Argh!). ;)

Anyway, I think those are the types of incorrect spellings the post was referring to. And, if so, I'd have to agree! :)

not sure wether i agree or not, i grew up in a world of jennifers, amandas, and katies and my name is charity. in some ways i enjoyed having a unique name (not many out there) but also did not, for the same reasons. with my children, i have given them names that were not too unique when they were born, but with my favorite spellings. I have Shianne (not a popular name when she was born, people thought I was crazy for naming her that) and Mikayla. My husband agreed with me, seeing as he grew up with the first name of Walter, and used his middle name his entire life!! I believe that parents should name their children how they want to, spell it the way they feel. Can you imagine a world where everyone was the same? What fun would that be?
