Thoughts On 2 Girl Names
| Fri, 03-03-2006 - 11:51pm |
I made a poll about the girl names Adeline and Aveline, but what are everyone's thoughts on it? Are there different pronunciations of Aveline? I always considered the two names to rhyme- Add-a-line and Av-a-line. Would the nn's Ava and Addie be appropriate? Would it be nice with big sis Elizabeth nn Ellie? Any other comments or suggestions, TIA!

Hi, again, nat. ;) If we had gone with Aveline, we would have used the pronunciation you mentioned (av-a-line, to rhyme with Adeline ... as in "sweet add-a-line" LOL), but I found that just as many people seemed to pronounce Adeline differently (many said Add-a-lyn, as in Adalyn/Adelyn(n), which is the spelling used for that particular pronunciation where I live).
Aveline is a Norman name, but when used in Ireland it is pronounced to sound like "I've-leen" ... the French pronunciation may be different.
I did a poll when we were considering it, and 37 people said they'd pronounce it exactly as you (and I) would -- Av-a-line. Another 6 would have said Ava-line (as in, long A like the name Ava), and only 2 would use the Irish pronunciation I've-leen. Another 12 said they'd say it a different way, and these ranged from Ava-leen/Av-a-leen to Av-a-lyn (as I mentioned with Adeline as well, so that may be regional). Incidentally, many of those who said av-a-leen or av-a-lyn said they would have considered that it could be av-a-line as well (just like some see Madeline and say Mad-a-lyn while others say Mad-a-line), so even those who at first thought one thing would have been equally comfortable using the other.
... hope that helped some. ;)
Ava or Addie would be very appropriate (and glad to see you went with the -ie ending like Ellie's nn LOL), but as I said in the other post I prefer Ava and Ellie together over Addie and Ellie, only because the nns are so similar/rhymey otherwise. Also, while I realize Ava is popular, Addie/Addy is a popular nn for quite a few popular names at the moment (Addison, Adeline, Adelyn, Adelaide, Addiena, etc.). It might depend on where you live, but I hear Addie a lot, whereas I've yet to meet a little Ava (even though I know it's popular on paper, KWIM?).
For the record, I think both are great names, so you really can't go wrong either way. ;)

I like both names myself. I really like the nn of Addie better than the nn of Ava, so I would lean towards Adeline for that reason. (I like Ava, just like Addie better !)
