Thoughts on Saskia, Sidonie - S names

Any thoughts on Saskia? Pronunciation? I saw a beautiful Spanish scientist on a recent documentary, and she pronounced it SAS-kee-ah. I've also heard SASK-yuh (like the end of Tonya). I understand it is rising in popularity in England and Scandinavian countries, and I thought it a nice alternative to the more popular Sasha. Anyone heard the name is use? What is your first impression? Too out there?

What about Sidonie? Or Sidony?

Sabine or Sabina?

Sumner?

Any other suggestions for unusual, not trendy, 2 or more syllable S names? I appreciate all your comments, but if you only like super-popular names, we will have to agree to disagree, especially since I have a super-common surname.

They are very original name, but I am thinking that they remind me of other names.

Im dont like Saskia too much, sorry but it kind of sounds like Sasquatch? could be a teasing point?

With Sidony it could be shortend to Sidone? - But then it sound like Simone.

With Sabina - this is quite pretty, but also sounds too much like Sabrina.

Have you thought of Sydney? I think this is a very pretty girls name.

I think SASK-yuh sounds beautiful. How would it be spelt? Sumner isn't really my style, it sounds like a stripper name to me, sorry! Sabine is okay, but I really prefer Satine. Have you considered Savannah or Savarah? Both are beautiful IMO.

Thanks for your input. This is my first child, but my impression is Savannah (or Savanna) is very popular, and we really can't do popular with a super common last name. (I want to avoid the Mary Smith/Linda Jones situation!) Any other good "S" names?

I love your S name ideas. Sidonie is actually very classic. Saskia is nms, but not because its not very common. I'm not a real fan of popular/ common, over-used names either. My little girl coming in May will be named either Cosette Marie or Cosette Audria. As for the more unusual S names that are on my favorites list...knock yourself out, I hope you see something you like.

Saraid (Irish form of Sarah)
Sybilla
Soleil
Sibley
Sireda
Sandrine
Soraya
Sonia (this was my 2nd choice next to Cosette, I love this name)
Saidah
Simone
Stasia
Safina
Sadira
Saina ("radiant"-russian)
Seren

I like Saskia. And usually I don't like unusual names, but I have actually met one or two people named Saskia.

Saskia is not my style... it sounds like Saskatchewan, or Sasquatch.

I have never heard of Sidonie. Is that like Sedona (the town in Arizona)?

I like Sabine. That is an unusual name here, although it is popular in Belgium. Along those lines would be Simone and Sophie.

Sumner is also not my style. Looks like you are just changing one letter of Summer, also I think it is a fort (or is that Sumpter?)

Of these I like Sabine the best.

There was a girl named Saskia (SASK-yuh pronunciation) in one of my classes in college. I think she said she was from Russia, though, and that's how I always picture someone with that name now.

Sidonie is ok. I don't like the Sidony spelling at all, though ... reminds me of Australia (and I know that's not what you're going for here). :)

Whenever I see Sabine/Sabina I think of beans! I'm terrible, I know! ;)~

Sumner looks like the trendy/bubbly Summer ... and also makes me think of fort Sumpter (think someone else said that too).

I saw the name Savarah mentioned on the other board (I think LOL) and thought of this post. I also like Sapphira, Seren and Saorla (Sairla).

HTH!
