so what do you all think on using the same first initial for siblings? is this a no-no, out dated or totally appropriate?

my bro, sis, and i are all A's- anya, andre, and alessandra-

our ds is Moses, and as of *today* dh and i can only agree on Margot for a girl. but if we have another child we dont want to be all M's, b/c we really like other boy names that dont start with M. agghhh. so is this a no-no and really lame? should we keep looking at

I do find it to be very cheesy and out-dated, especially when the parents continue to follow the pattern for three, four or more children (then it really seems forced ... like they felt they had to go with names starting with that letter rather than using names they actually liked, as you mentioned).

However, if Margot is absolutey the name for you, that would be the only exception in my mind. It's one thing to feel like you have to create some sort of cutesy, matchy pattern just because they're siblings, but totally another if the same initial thing happens to be a coincidence (and would NOT be continued for a third child).

If I were you, I would keep Margot on the back burner and see if anything else (non-M ) appeals. You may find another name you like just as much that doesn't pose the same problem, or you may realize you love Margot enough to ignore the matchiness. But please, don't feel obligated to keep the M initials going for the next child, if there is one. Just use the names you love. ;)

By the way, I know it's not the same, but do you like any other non-M forms of Margaret -- Greta, Gretchen, Annegrete or Pearl (from the meaning), for example? Just a thought.

For me, two with the same 1st initial is a coincidence and it's okay as long as they're not matchy matchy (ex:

Although I love Margo as a nn for Margaret especially, alliteration is nms. DH and I both have alliterated fn and ln, all M's, and I've completely ruled out any M fn's even though there are some that I love. Perhaps you could use Margo as a mn?

It's a pretty big pet peeve of mine. I find it really takes away from the individual names, *especially* when you have a son with a name so great as Moses. I would definitely avoid it.

I should have strong opinion on this because growing-up all five members of my family went by B first names AND our last name started with B. My brother, first cousin, and I also share the same initials, BEB. My mother HATES it now and thinks it makes life confusing. I have no real opinion same initials. I do have an opinion on Margot....I LOVE IT!!! Moses and Margot sound great to me.

Good luck,

I have two P's and at times I combine the names inadvertently--and Parker calls me on it!

I don't think naming your children w/ or w/o the same 1st letters is a trendy thing ... I think it's all just personal preference. I made sure to give all 4 of my boys names that did NOT start w/ any of the same letters/sounds ... it was just my preference.

Since you might branch out w/ other names in the future & since you don't seem to be totally hung up on the name, Margot, maybe you should keep looking at other names that don't start w/ "M".

Instead of Margot, how about Margaret?

My other suggestions

Blythe
Lillian- nn Lily
Violet
Dakota

Hmm.. I can't think of more.

Good luck on finding a name for your upcoming little one!

BTW, your little Moses is so handsome. Moses fits him completely.

I dont think you have an irreversable trend with just two names. If you had 6 J's and tried to name the 7th something else, that might suggest youre theme got the better of you, but two is not a theme.

I have a similar situation, although I am not preg. yet. But the two girls names me and DH can agree on both start w/ J, and one of them would be shortened to a nn that starts w/ A, and the only boys name we can agree on starts with A. We were talking about names last night, and my DH is totally against same first letters for sibs (my family is all J's and he makes fun of it all the time), but he even said, "it would be stupid not to use the names we love, just because they start with the same letter." I do not want to have them all start with the same either, but I had to agree that not using a name you love because it starts the same, is just as dumb as using a name you don't really love just because it does start the same. I hope you understand what I mean.
