Totally in love with the name Pearl, and I am having a hard time getting my dh on board. Even my sisters think it's way too old fashioned. Opinions any one?

Pearl is due for a comeback ... I'm with you! ;)

It actually fits in with several current trends, including ...

- lesser-used gem/stone type names, like Ruby, Emerald (I know one ), Gemma, Jade)

- other names with naturistic connotations, especially (but not limited to) short and/or single-syllable choices that work well as mns. Think Rose, Faye, Calla, Daisy, Lily, Ivy, Iris, May, Linnea and Violet.

- "Old Lady" names in general! These are hot! And the less common/popular, the better. Those who aren't as familiar with current naming trends (in other words, your dh and sisters ) may not realize, but Emily, Emma, Abigail, Olivia, Isabella, Hannah and Ava -- all in the top TEN -- are old lady names. ;) They're not new, for goodness sake! But they're popular, and therefore more mainstream. That doesn't make Pearl any MORE old-lady, or any LESS attractive. Just less familiar to those particular people.

If you can't get dh sold on Pearl, he might fall for a slightly altered version, like Perla. It's probably less familiar to him and the feminine "a" ending might sound softer or more appealing to his ear, KWIM?

Did I mention I love Pearl? Congrats on having some wonderful taste, even if those around you disagree. ;)

I love Pearl!! It is so great. If you can't get it as a fn, maybe a mn.

What a beautiful name - - I would not have thought of it, but I loved it immediately upon seeing it. It's classic but not overused, and old-fashioned names have really made a huge come-back in recent years. I hope that your husband will take some time to look at the popularity of other old-fashioned names, e.g., Hannah, to see that choosing Pearl will not by any means be giving your daughter an "old lady" name!

I love it! It's soooo sweet for a precious little baby or young girl, plus simple & classy for an adult. Get dh on board, & do it! :)

I find it absolutely stunning and very fresh, not 'old lady' at all. After all, old fashioned names are coming back in style!

I feel way better after reading your replies. I am going to stick to my guns. Now for mn suggestions for Pearl, because as passionate as I am about Pearl, nothing particularly strikes me for a mn. Any help is truly appreciated.

I'd go a bit unconventional for a mn with Pearl. I'm not talking Ziggy Moon-Unit or anything like that (LOL), I just mean you'll want to avoid the type of short, filler mns many people use: Lynn, Anne, Marie, Rose, etc. They just won't work. ;)

Pearl would be great paired with a longer (three or more syllable) mn that's equally "old-lady," but if dh prefers something more modern in the middle, that would work as well. For example:

Pearl Matilda
Pearl Madeleine
Pearl Frances
Pearl Irene
Pearl Catherine (Caitlin, if dh prefers)
Pearl Josephine
Pearl Viola
Pearl Beatrix/Beatrice
Pearl Cecilia
Pearl Genevieve
Pearl Virginia
Pearl Charlotte/a
Pearl Theresa
Pearl Estelle
Pearl Adele
Pearl Adelia
Pearl Cordelia
Pearl Rebecca
Pearl Amelia
Pearl Emeline/a
Pearl Victoria
Pearl Vivian(a)
Pearl Sophia
Pearl Naomi
Pearl Augusta
Pearl Evangeline
Pearl Eugenie/a
Pearl Octavia
Pearl Isidora/Isadora
Pearl Eudora
Pearl Felicity

You get the idea. ;) HTH!

If your dh has a name that he likes, try pairing Pearl with that, or use a more common name that he might be more comfortable with, or even something trendy that he might like.

Pearl was my grandmother's name and though I am usually a big fan of the family name thing, I just can't bring myself to like this one.

I don't really care for it but that's just my opinion. If you like it...consider it!
