Too unusual? Too commonplace?

I'm going for a name that's classic, solid, and strong without being pretentious or stuffy. I want it to be simple, but not horribly commonplace. I want it to fit just as well on a playful, rambunctious, sprightly child, a Supreme Court judge, a quite, pensive poet, a doctor, or an outdoorsman/woman. I'd rather avoid trendy and Kre8Tive names.

I'm considering these names:

Daniel
James
Alan
Adam
Henry
Peter

Alice
Dorothy- although I don't really like any of the nicknames for this name
Nancy
Margaret
Eloise
Molly

I also like these names but I'm afraid that they might be too stuffy:
Charles
Edward/ Edmund
Virginia
Charlotte
Gretchen (too German?)

I've added Virginia, Charlotte, Gretchen, Henry, Charles, and Edward. I'm removing Samantha and Violet.

What do you think of these names? How well do you think they meet my criteria? Any suggestions?

I also need help thinking up fitting middle names, especially for the boys’ names. I like Anne and Mae as girls’ middle names, and I'm sort of fond of Eleanor also. I don't care for Grace or Rose, and I think that middle names with a number of syllables other than two work best with my two syllable last name.

Hmm, that is interesting. Maybe it is because of association for me, all of the Peter's I have known have been pretty wimpy.

For the boys I really like Daniel and James.
For the girls I really like Samantha.

I think they're all very "classic" names.
And they won't "date" your child.

Just my 2 cents :)

Good luck!!!

I am really loving the name Peter lately (thank you, Heroes, lol) The only name I can't really envision on a little boy would be Alan. But you've got great taste!

My favorites from your girl list? - Margaret & Eloise, with Alice a close third. I can totally "see" any of those on a newborn, a teenager, a girl in any stage of her life. Plus you've got all those great nickname choices - Meg, Maggie, Greta, Ellie, Lo, Allie....

btw, I love your name too! (I don't know if yours is but) it's my favorite nickname for Elizabeth.

I like Alan and Adam from your boys' list--they're very clean and strong. I'd probably place Peter with either as a mn. Alice and Eloise resonate with me from the girl's list, with Margaret, Dorothy or Eleanor as mn; I'd also like to move Eleanor into the first name ranks.
