I voted for Gillian, but honestly I like both. Personally, if I was going to use her full name all the time, I'd go with Gillian, but if I wanted to use the nn mainly, I go with Jillian/Jill. Because I like Jill far better than Gill.

Yes - that's where I'm coming from. I want her to be Gillian - not automatically Jill - but F/F all say people won't be able to pronounce it right. And my mom's already calling her Jill even though I say her name won't be Jill, it will be Gillian. Luckily hubby's on board with G spelling - maybe because huge pregnancy hormones led to 3 hours of sobbing over this issue the other night, heh heh - but now I'm more rational and don't want to give this little girl a name she'll have trouble with the rest of her life!

Thanks for the opinion!

I've known two Gillian/Jillians in my life (both now mid 20s). Gillian was ALWAYS Gillian and Jillian was usually Jill. And no one EVER mispronounced Gillian. She never had a problem with it. Also, given the popularity of the actress Gillian Anderson (of X-Files fame), I can't imagine there is anyone who doesn't know how to pronounce Gillian.

Maybe that will help convince your family and friends that it won'tbe a problem. :) Good luck!

I really like Gillian in theory, but in reality I think Jillian works better. I went all the way thru school (k-12) with a Gillian and everyone from teachers to other kids mispronounced her name at first, either calling her Gilligan (this was the early 80s) or giving it a hard G sound. She was constantly correcting people.

Also I have a good friend with DD named Gillian who goes by Jilly but spelled Gilly, and it looks so ridiculous to me.

I say if you love Gillian go with it, but be aware that many people may screw it up. It looks more elegant to my eyes than Jillian. I suppose it is just a trade off.

If you definitely want the Jillian pronunciation and if you think you'll ever call her Jill for short, I'd go with Jillian just b/c there's less confusion. I know a baby Gillian pronounced with a hard G, and sometimes they call her Gill (like a fish's gill), so I'm sure there are others out there with that pronunciation as well.

I personally prefer Jillian.

Good luck making a decision!
