Is Tristan a little feminine or wimpy?

I like the name Tristan a lot. It was my first pick all along.
But, a couple of people told me that it was too feminine for a boy.

Do you agree?
I appreciate your honest opinions.
Thank you! JEN

I do not see Tristan as feminine. I have known a few male Tristans, and I always thought of it as a good masculine name. Maybe they see it that way b/c it's similar to Kristen? IDK.

That said, almost any boy name is subject to becoming unisex, so you're almost never safe.

If it's the name you love, go for it. My advice would be to not discuss your names with anyone IRL and just announce the name when he's born. No would dare say that about the name once the child was born.

Good luck,

Liz

I don't know what it is about the name but it has always been a name that "bothers me". Maybe it is a feminine feel to it. Can't quite put my finger on it. Of course, I'm sure some of my kids names would bother other people too. LOL. It's all a matter of your own personal taste.

To me, it is both too feminine and wimpy (and very soap-operish to boot)...but a lot of people disagree with me!

If I'm honest I have to admit that I've always thought of it as a wimpy name...just nms.

BUT...it's not about anyone else. If you love it you should use it.

To me, it's all-boy. I think of Wagner, "Legends of the Fall," and my skateboarding/soccer-obsessed godson. Nothing feminine or wimpy there!

I wouldn't call it feminine or wimpy...I would call it more esoteric, just a little outside the norm, so some people might feel the need to tag it as strange or wimpy.

I agree, good description. Most of the people I have known who name their kids Tristan are a little more artsy, into philosophy, very educated, etc. Tristan does fit a "type" to some extent, but I wouldn't call that type wimpy.

Prev. post now has me thinking of Brad Pitt's character in "Legends of the Fall"...mmmm...:)

I agree with Liz. She said it just like I was going to! I am not telling anyone (except on the boards) our babies name til he's born. I discussed ideas earlier in my pregnancy and got all sorts of comments, no matter what the name. That being said, I know two Tristans that are boys and two that are girls.

I do find it a bit soft sounding, but I still like it.

Tristan is definitely a romantic name, but not necessarily feminine... I think of the character Brad Pitt played in the movie (can't remember the name of it.)

I do think of him as more of a lover than a fighter, and don't know how that would strike you personally.
