What do you think of "tryndee" names? By "tryndee" I mean names that are super popular, but spelled in different ways. (Aidyn, Madysynne, Caytlyn, Kayden, etc.)

I'll go first. Personally I am not a fan. I understand people naming a child something different or old fashioned so the kid doesn't go through life being known as "Jason B" because he is one of 5 Jasons in his class. But I don't understand taking a common or popular name and purposely "misspelling" it to make it more unique.

Why Madysynne or McKynna? Your daughter will still have the "same" name as a bunch of other girls, but will just have to correct the spelling. Why not Helena or Cecilia or Eleanor or something else uncommon? KWIM?

I actually have nothing against the names. As long as the parents are comfortable with the popularity, most of those you mentioned are fine.

I definitely DON'T like the "spelled in different ways" part, however. When I see Aidyn, Madysynne, Caytlyn, Kayden, etc., they just look so obviously and horribly misspelled. It makes me think either the child has very young, uneducated parents who really don't know how to spell or ones that mistakenly think Madysynne is somehow set apart from every other Madison she will come across (other than in her spelling abilities, of course LOL). It's especially obvious when you see them in a group like this, because together they look like a terrible mish-mash of letters that don't even look like actual names -- and the letter Y should run away ... far, far away! ;)

Haha, the letter Y should be illegal. I HATE tryndee names. I just don't get it. I know a lot of people's rationale for doing it is, "Well, I want my child's name to be unique." Um....so don't name her Madison!!

A friend of mine was teaching at a Pre-K last year and some of the names she came across almost made me want to cry. Off the top of my head I can only remember the worst offender...U'Neek, but you can imagine how bad the other were.

Why oh why do people do this to their poor innocent children??!

I guess I sterotype people. When I see names with those "Unique" spellings, makes me thing their mom must have been an illiterate, unwed, teenage mother, who thought she was being "cool" by giving her child a unique spelling to an overly popular name.

Overall not a good impression to make.

Nothing against young moms or unwed moms, but give me a break! It makes the parents look so uneducated and stupid. Why do that to your child?

Hi, my name is chlamydia. Please don't laugh at me, my mother just thought it sounded like a pretty and unique name.

My first question - what are you hoping to do? Give you child a unique name? Or a popular one?

I don't see the *mysspellyng* as the best way to offer your child a life-long gift of unique-ness (if that's your goal). As others have said, it's just going to be a headache for years to come as you and your child are constantly correcting the spelling.

As far as following the *trendy* names - if you like them, you like them!!!! That's how they got popular... people are using them!! If you have favorites, that are really "in" right now, then I would say, use your favorite :)

Someone in another thread said something about this naming thing being easy; I hope they were sarcastic, b/c I see it as a *huge* responsibility that we have before baby even gets here!

This will be a label - that distinguishes another human being - for all eternity! (what if your daughter is the 'fyrst amerycan presydent'?

There's a pretty cool site you might like putzing around on for some ideas...

Enjoy, and good luck!

Some names are spelled many different ways, everyone has the right to spell the name the way they feel is best or the way they like....one way is not "righter" than the other! Just more common.
