Two girls names, which is better?

We don't know if we're having a boy or girl yet but we have already chosen the boy's name and we thought we were all set for the girl's until both our families said they hated the name, Bedelia Teddye. My mother-in-law refuses to call her Bedelia (or Bea) and wants to call her either Delia or Dilly.

Our second choice is: Piper Teddye.

We have to use Teddye as the middle name as it was my Grandmother's name and she was very important to me.

So which is better:

Bedelia Teddye (Bee for short)

or

Piper Teddye

Honestly, I would go w/ Piper. Bedelia reminds me of Amelia Bedelia and bidet. Bee/a is a cute nickname if you do decide to stay with it. I've never liked Delia b/c of the Johnny Cash song.

I like Piper better than Bedelia.

Your MIL REFUSES to call her by the name you give her? Ugh. I would have to then refuse to let her see my dd. Sorry you have to deal with that!

I don't personally care for Bedelia and agree with pp that I immediately think of Amelia Bedelia. I think Piper is very cute. BUT...I think you should go with what you and your hubby love and not make the decision because your MIL is being difficult...

Good Luck!

I think Bedelia and Piper have very different styles, so I might go with whichever one fits your general name style better. Bedelia is a sort of fiesty old-fashioned name, and in my mind it would go with names like like Beatrix, Adele, Maeve, Coretta, Mayella, Delilah, etc. Piper to me sounds sort of androgynous and very modern, and would go with Paige, Kelsey, Teagan, etc.
Unless you hate the nn Delia, I think it's a really sweet option and shows that she really doesn't hate the name Bedelia, it's not like she said she'd call her Susie instead. That's a great plus to Bedelia: it has so many more great nicknames than Piper!

Piper is nice, but I can see it becoming trendy/popular soon. I like Bedelia, and definitely think you should use that. So spunky and uncommon.

Yeah, I wonder if Piper will be popular soon. I'm not a fan of popular names.

I wish my MIL would call our daughter by the name we have chosen for her. We told her that we're going to call her Bea/Bee for short but she says that sounds too old ladyish and she can't call a child that. So, then I suggested just calling her by her full name (Bedelia) but she said she doesn't like that name at all. We had to talk her out of Dilly and make Delia the compromise.

HOPEFULLY, once the little one is born your MIL's love for her will overshadow her negativity about the name and she will lose the rudeness. Honestly, I would have my DH sit down and talk to her. She had her chance to name her children, and now you and DH have the same. She does not have a say in what to name YOUR baby! She will have to live with Bedelia, nn Bea. This may be a little harsh, but I can see my MIL doing something similar to this, and it would make me very resentful. I would recommend that DH have a serious talk with her to resolve this issue if she doesn't change her tune after the baby is born. It could really hurt your and DH's relationship with her, IMO, if you have unresolved issues like this.

FWIW, I think Bedelia, nn Bea is very sweet and is a perfectly fine name. Certainly people will have different tastes, but just because your MIL doesn't personally like it does not mean that she should act rudely to you about it. I'm willing to bet that the name will grow on her b/c it will be someone she loves.

Good luck, let us know what you decide!

Thank you everybody! It's nice to get some perspective. I was starting to believe that everyone would think Bedelia is an awful horrible name.

My SIL (from the same side of the family) said to me, "You can't control what people call your child." She doesn't like Bedelia either. Silly me, I thought we could control what people call our own child!

My mother has been slightly better, she doesn't like Bedelia but she seems more accepting of calling her what we choose.

I like Bedelia w/ nn Bee/Bea.

If you're into compromise, although you don't have to be since it's your baby to name, so no compromised is actually required here, but if you're wanting more alternatives to Dilly you could go with :
Billy....You want Bee, MIL wants Dilly...it seems like a great compromise for a nn.
Dely (Pronunced Dee-Lee). I know a Delia who goes by Dely.

And finally, in case you're interested, a suggestion for a name you might like since it is very similar to Bedelia:
Cordelia - with great nn possibilities of Cora, Cordy, Delia, Lia.

Good Luck and let us know what you decide

-Annie
