Two girls names, which is better?

We don't know if we're having a boy or girl yet but we have already chosen the boy's name and we thought we were all set for the girl's until both our families said they hated the name, Bedelia Teddye. My mother-in-law refuses to call her Bedelia (or Bea) and wants to call her either Delia or Dilly.

Our second choice is: Piper Teddye.

We have to use Teddye as the middle name as it was my Grandmother's name and she was very important to me.

So which is better:

Bedelia Teddye (Bee for short)

or

Piper Teddye

I love the nn Bea. You might like Beatrice, this way you get the nn Bea and your MIL can't morph the name into a nn you dislike. Of the 2 choices I like Piper more, but that is just me.

Good luck

Piper.

Bedelia just reminds me of 'Amelia Bedelia' - from the children's books.

But I loved Amelia Bedelia books when I was a little girl and my Grandmother (whose name my daughter will have as her mn) used to read them to me. I don't understand how being reminded of the Amelia Bedelia books is a bad thing? I thought it was a bonus! Like Ramona from the Ramona books or Madeline from the Madeline books.

I agree... I definitely see it as a bonus. It is a beautiful name.

Oh, I loved those books as well, don't get me wrong. I guess, because the character is older, I don't associate it with a little girl's name -- but I would with Ramona or Madeline. I also tend to remember the character as a bit klutzy.

It's personal preference. I like the sound of Piper better, but, obviously, choose the name you love. :) She's your baby girl.

I haven't read the other replies yet, but I LOVE Bidelia (prefer this spelling, but that's just me ). Thought I was the only one. LOL

I actually like the nns Delia and Dilly (or Della, if I might add one). ;) I can totally understand if you're using Bea for a special reason or really hate the others, however. It's always annoying when people insist on calling your child by something other than their name (or a nn they use regularly), especially if it's because they're trying to emphasize just how much they dislike the name you chose. Grrrrr.

It's a lovely name, though, and I much prefer it to Piper (which isn't horrible but seems a more common/trendy choice). Not that it IS overly-common or trendy ... just to say that if you love Bedelia, you'd probably be happier with something more quirky and spunky, KWIM? Also, you definitely shouldn't feel obligated to change your mind just because it's not someone else's taste. I mean, it's not like you've made it up or butchered the spelling or anything like that -- things that could give her a harder time as she matures, if that makes sense.

Go for it! ;)

You said it! ;)

I just posted a moment ago, but am just now reading through the other replies, and I cannot BELIEVE how many people posted about the Amelia Bedelia books being a negative! LOL I was just thinking about how to say exactly this when I came upon your own response.

I'm pretty sure anyone that's every read -- and loved -- them would think quite the opposite. They're vividly entertaining and make reading interesting, for young and old alike. ;) My five-year-old has just recently discovered them (or I suppose REdiscovered them, since many are old copies from when my sister and I were small), and thinks they're wonderful! I even know of quite a few little boys who think these book are hilarious (the same little boys who would normally NEVER sit still long enough to read a book LOL). There's definitely nothing negative about that association. I think it's a wonderful one!

The fact that it's yet another link to your grandmother is even better. Makes me love Bedelia even more for you ... though I did to begin with. ;)

I love Piper. Before we found out we are having a boy I had already chosen Piper for a girl!
