Two girls names, which is better?
| Mon, 04-09-2007 - 2:34pm |
We don't know if we're having a boy or girl yet but we have already chosen the boy's name and we thought we were all set for the girl's until both our families said they hated the name, Bedelia Teddye. My mother-in-law refuses to call her Bedelia (or Bea) and wants to call her either Delia or Dilly.
Our second choice is: Piper Teddye.
We have to use Teddye as the middle name as it was my Grandmother's name and she was very important to me.
So which is better:
Bedelia Teddye (Bee for short)
or
Piper Teddye

I like the name Piper better of the two, but I think if you like the name Bedelia, you should stick by your guns. Tell your MIL that old-fashioned names are in these days, and with all the Emmas and Rubys around, Bea/Bee will fit right in.
Bowing to her rudeness by changing a name that you love would just be wrong. She shouldn't be putting you in that position. Saying she doesn't like a name is one thing; saying she will refuse to use it is altogether different. I think--if she were my MIL--my response to her objection to the nn Bea/Bea would be "Fine, you can call her whatever you want, but everyone else is going to call her Bea, because that's what we're going to call her." (After all, lots of people are called different nicknames by different people.)
On another note, I liked the Amelia Bedelia books as a child, but find the association a bit negative nonetheless. I think the reason is that I have always thought of the Bedelia in her name as a rhyming word with Amelia rather than a name in its own right (a la Banana Fana fo Fana). But, I like the style, so I think I would get over that association really quickly and come to like the name quite a bit.

P.S. - I actually love the nickname Bee, and wish I did like Bedelia or Beatrice/Beatrix more because I would jump at the chance to use the nickname. Anyone, any suggestions for a different name that would lend itself to nn Bee?
I also like Dilly, probably because it reminds me of the lullaby Lavender's Blue and I can imagine singing it to my daughter and it having personal meaning for us.

I don't think of Amelia Bedelia as a negative either, but there's a good chance kids will tease her by calling her that.
I love the name Piper .. Its on my list of names right now but my BF doesn't like it

I loved the Amelia Bedelia books, too, but I think the reason for the negative association might be that Amelia Bedelia isn't all that bright. Everything she does is silly b/c she doesn't know any better. Yes, she's a sweet character, but not necessarily the intelligent image that people may want associated with their child. That was one of my DH's objections to the name Amelia (despite my attempts to convince him otherwise with Amelia Earhart references ;-) ).
Neither Bedelia nor Piper are really my style, and I actually think they're very different styles. Bedelia seems more old-fashioned, a little quieter, and maybe a bit more intelligent/sophisticated. Piper seems spunky, outgoing, and either musical or athletic. Of course, a child with either name can be either, all, or none of those things, but those are the initial impressions I have. :-) This might be a case of waiting until the baby is born to make a final decision or see if something just strikes you during the pregnancy.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
We've decided to keep Bedelia. We both really love the nn Bee/a (haven't decided on spelling yet) and it's unique without being completely "out there". I think our families will come around to it. Most people don't like things out of the ordinary, they like familarity. When my brother was born 21 years ago my mom named him Ethan and everybody was aghast at how horrible that name is. Now fast forward to 2007 and it's one of the top ten most popular names!
hi Becky,
I think you can use the nn Bee with any name that starts with a B.
