Woah! I just had a really odd moment. I think i know what to call my child,
if it is a girl:
Umma
a boy
Moshe

What do you think?

They are both very different names... I'm not quite sure how to pronounce either. With Umma, I think it should be pronounced the same way Uma is - OO-muh. I like that, but I think you should spell it with only the 1 M. With this spelling, I think Um-uh. As for Moshe, I'm not so keen on this one. I like your girls pick better. What about Isaac or Moses? Isaiah is also very nice. But if you like it, its ultimately your decision.

Yes it is oo-ma, i prefer the Umma spelling, because it means nation in hebrew, also, Moshe is Israeli form of Moses - which to my ear sounds much nicer than Moses which is greek, and wrongly pronounced (for that matter Jesus is Yeshua!)

Unless those are ethnic names that mean a lot to you I would suggest finding something else. I'm not crazy about either name, especially Umma.

I just read the other posts before mine, including yours, & I really think everyone will pronounce Umma as it looks ... UM-uh ... not OO-muh. And I think most will have a lot of trouble pronouncing Moshe as well.

I am familiar with Moshe since I know a few, but i have never seen Umma with that spelling. (I don't speak Hebrew and am not Jewish, so keep that in mind) I do think that most people who are unfamiliar with the language will pronounce Umma incorrectly at first, but if you live in an area with a large Jewish community or you just don't mind correcting people, I don't think it's a problem. Neither are names I would chose, but I think they are nice and good tribute to their heritage.

Umma is nice, when I first saw it, I pronounced it like the actress Uma. I don't necessarily care for the Hebrew Moshe, but then I have a hard time thinking of Moses as a childs name, so since you prefer the Hebrew spellings, I think either name is fine.

"Umma" is pronounced "UM-muh", correct? (If you wanted Uma, pronounced OOM-muh like Uma Thurman, it would only have one "m". As I recall, Uma Thurman's parents chose it because of it's meaning in Indian, I think it was. Some Eastern language.) I'm not sure if I would personally choose it - it's almost Emma, but isn't, and almost Uma but isn't. It might cause some confusion in pronunciation and spelling down the road. On the other hand, it's definitely unique!
