Unusual names and families' resistance

I posted on the August 2005 Expecting Club board, but I thought I'd put it on this board, too, considering it's about baby names.

The very 'different' baby name that my husband and I like is Trinity Blue. We love it for a little girl, and we both have 'odd' names ourselves. Yes, mine truly is Xavery and my husband's name is Doran. We enjoy having unusual names, and are always very partial to them, but our families HATE the name we love for a little girl. (The idea came from Cher who has a son named Elijah Blue...I've always loved it.) My MIL thinks it sounds like a "porn star" name and my own father just says it's "horrible". We plan to use Blue for the middle name if we're having a boy, too, but Trinity is definitely not a family favorite either.

Obviously, we'll name our baby what we wish, but it's tough to have our families so against our choices!

And don't worry, if you're against it, too, just let me know. No big deal. It's why I'm posting for thoughts and opinions.

My name is Taryn and when my parents named me there was an uproar in our family too! Both sets of grandparents thought it was a terrible choice. But once it was attached to a cute baby (how modest of me!) there was little else said - and now I think they like it. I don't really care - I love my name and can't wait to bless my children with fun and somewhat different names so they never have to be Sarah M or Tyler B in their class !
We've decided not to share names with our families until our future children are born to avoid this issue.
Trinity Blue is NMS personally but I don't think it's way out there by any means and I picture a cute and spunky girl! My personal advice would be don't worry about your family they are going to love this baby no matter what and this too shall pass.

Hi, I'm having the same trouble with both my family and my in laws in regards to the name we chose for our son due in May 2005. I honestly don't think that Trinity is so strange it's not extremely common but not rare either. And Blue is very nice>>different. It does not make your lil' girl sound like a porn star. I think it's a great choice, Good Luck!

Believe it or not (and especially after seeing the poll that was posted very recently), my name is Brynn (actual name is Brynnen, but Brynn has always been my nickname)and I have a daughter named Autumn. I have a brother named Griffin, a brother named Price, a sister named Zara, and my ex-boyfriend (and Autumn's father) was named Jaden. As you can see, I'm very used to being around "unusual names", but I don't find them at all unusual. To me, these names are very special and speak volumes for the identities of us all. People tend to remember you for being so unique, and I'd choose any of these names over John, Pete, Susan, Beth, etc, any day!

Well Trinity is NMSAA and I have been hearing it more and more so I hardly consider it unusual. I really like Blue as a mn though, or even Blu for a girl maybe? My suggestion, forget what the grandparents say and name the baby. We didn't tell anyone IRL our names until after the babies were born to avoid this sort of thing. It seems if the baby isn't here yet the name is fair game for attack, once the baby has arrived then people are much more kind. Good luck!

I actually like Trinity Blue very much! Doesn't someone else famous have a daughter with the same middle name, spelled Bleu?? Maybe John Travolta? Anyway, I'm surprised your family doesn't like the unusual name considering what they named you and your dh! Which by the way are both very cool names that I have never heard before!

Good luck,
Ali

Xavery,

We have not decided on a name for our new DD but I got this idea from a friend. Don't ask for permission or even ask opinions.. this is your baby! You get to name it.. if they don't like the name, they can adopt a baby and call it whatever they want, but yours is special and gets whatever name you give it.

My personal favorite response to anyone who responds negatively to the names I have chosen are:

"When the naming of OUR baby becomes a democracy, we will let you know". It shut my mom up and she hasn't commented since :)

I honestly don't particularly care for the name Trinity. I have two connotations with it: the character from the Matrix, and a tenet of the Catholic faith. It also makes me think of the number "three" b/c of the name's meaning.

If you are interested in it for religious reasons...what about something like Rosarie (rosary)? It's different yet sounds more like an actual name-- it has a bit of a different spin, though.

Honestly, I don't really care for the pairing of Trinity Blue. I would decide on using one or the other and then picking something else...you can still use something different and unique, but I would pick something that flows a little better.

Well, best wishes to you!

at this point Trinity isn't even original or unusual anymore - it's very trendy and gaining in popularity.

Trinity is a word with a very religious conotation - so I don't think it particularly well matches up with having Blue for a middle name

but, of course, it really is completely up to you and your husband

they'll get used to it later.

good luck
