Using initials as nicknames

My friend just had a little girl, Charlotte Anna S*******.
Using her initials CAS, they are going to call her Cassie as a nn.
I had never heard of doing this before. Have you? What do you think of this?
(On a side note, I think that Charlotte is going to be in the top 20 very soon...I now know 6 under the age of 3. I still love it.)

I've heard of people doing this occassionally -- actually, I think we talked about this on the board not long ago in regards to the nn Ace. I knew a friend of a friend at one point whose was called Ace because his initials were ACE. It's not something I'd do personally (especially in your friend's case -- if I wanted my daughter to be Cas, I'd named her Cassandra, not Charlotte), but I think it can be cute.
I actually surprised myself not long ago when I was looking at my list of possible combinations because I really loved Ian Alastair (or Iain Alastair) and then I realized that either way, his initials would be IAN (because my last name starts with N).
obviously I don't this person personally, but Jeb Bush uses his initials for his first name "jeb"

Well, if DH & I ever have a 3rd (not likely) & it is a boy, our top pick is John Edward S____ nn Jess/Jesse from the initials.
Oh, that's actually pretty cute. I like it!
I totally agree about Charlotte. They're everywhere! I'm suprised that it wasn't higher this year. Perhaps next year a big jump will happen. Of course we have to wait another 52 weeks. ;)
