Ok..I thought the name Gemma was great until I mentioned it to my grandmother!!! I have an uncle JIM and she said JIMMA? Am I crazy, maybe there was a bad phone connection b/c I do not see Gemma pronounced that way? WDYT? If people are going to confuse GEM w/ JIM then the name is out...we do not want that association. Maybe I don't see it but others really well. What are you opinions???
Thanks so much!!!

Whne I see Gemma I think/say GEM-UH (as in gem, pretty rocks). Not sure how you could get Jim out of that tho...maybe I have the wrong regional dialect? HTH!

No way...I don't think the two will be associated at all. No matter what name you choose, there will usually be someone that will either mis-pronounce it, or say something rude about it. Stick with Gemma...it's beautiful!!!

I love the name Gemma, but to me Gem and Jim sound exactly the same...like Thyme and Time sound the same, but are 2 different words. I would never think that Gem was a masculine nn. I have a friend whose name is Jemila (arabic) and she often goes by the nn Jem. She doesn't see her nn as masculine at all. I think that your grandmother was unfamilar with the name and does not know how to spell it, I am sure once you clear-up the lost in translation, she will see what a lovely name Gemma is.

good luck,
Brooke

I see Gemma as (GEM-uh) not JIM... maybe it was a bad phone connection!

Will you be using a middle name with Gemma?

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Gemma brings diamonds, rubies and crystals to my mind, not a male nn, and I'm sure it'll be the same with most people.

I doubt they will be confused, especially since the name Jim is really outdated. I really think you should just go with the name, it is gorgeous. It's really not that unusual at all.

I honestly think you're overanalyzing this name too much. I can say that because I am exactly the same way, and I identify with your situation! I've been overanalyzing the name Lorelei for the past year. Other posters on this site can probably attest to my overanalytical side.

Gemma is a GORGEOUS name, and in no way do I think of Jim when hearing it. In fact, I think of a beautiful gem like a ruby or emerald. I am from the south (I think you may have mentioned you were too), and I have run into several Gemmas. One was a baby, and her parents pronounced it like the "gem" in "gemstone." The other was a middle aged woman who pronounced it like the "g" in "girl." I personally prefer the former, and I think most people would pronounce it that way too. If they don't, you can simply correct them and then they'll know for future reference. It seems to be a rather well known name, though, and I don't think you'll run into many issues with it.

Personally, I think Gemma is a beautiful name, and I hope you go with it! Best of luck!

Honestly - Gemma is not my style of name at all. With that said, I dont think that many people will confuse Gemma with Jimma

I'm honestly just not a fan of the name Gemma. I think there was a barbie doll or soemthing with pink hair and a rocker look named Gemma when I was a kid. LOL. And I also think that when people HEAR it they can easily get it wrong. It's easy to pronounce if you read it though. Good luck!

Oh that is something my grandma would say!! I know my husband's grandma made a comment about my daughter's name and how "bizarre" it was (Annika) when she heard it. Too funny!!

Gemma is a beautiful name- it sounds nothing like Jim! It's very pretty and feminine.
