I am just curious to hear opinions about the name Vespa. My dh would never consider using it, and it's not really on our list of favorites. For some reason I'm just drawn to this name, though. What are your thoughts?

Don't like it...I automatically think of the scooter.

Jamie and I just put a hefty downpayment on a Vespa. We know tons of people who have them -- they are very popular in the city because they are convenient and get excellent gas mileage.

Honestly, I would be astounded and appalled if someone I knew named their child Vespa -- just as I would be if they named their child Jeep or Harley. Now, I know a lot of people do give their kids vehicle names -- Sienna, Harley, Lexus, etc. -- but it's just not for me at all. I would strongly advise against this name. (And honestly, even without the association that I can't overlook...I just don't like it as a name. I don't think it's very pretty. Sorry.)

I'm not really familar with the Vespa scooter. I always thought it was a form of the name Vesper - a reference to Saturn or Jupiter (or something along those lines). I still think it has a pretty sound to it - vehicle associationa side. :)

nms, but I kind of like the sound of it - if it weren't for the scooters! I think certain vehicle names are ok, the ones like Sienna or Denali that were around before the vehicle and have another association that will likely outlast it. Vespa is just too tied to the scooters though, they've been around since 1946!

I had no idea it was a scooter until I read the other responses, but my first thought when I read the subject was 'UGH! No way!' I am definitley not a fan. Sorry.

Scooter aside, doesn't Vespa mean "of the night" or something? I could be way off, but it seems an odd meaning to have attached to a little girl (or grown woman, if you KWIM). ;) I'd also think you'd named her after a Bond girl (Vesper from Casino Royale).

It means "evening" or "evening star." The "vespers" are evening prayers. I actually think it's a lovely name with a lyrical meaning, though I prefer the original form Vesper. Too bad about the scooters, though.
