WDYT about these?

I found a few more names that I haven't heard for quite some time and I was wondering what you think of them. Some are old names that I hope make a comeback. Need your opinion on:

Nadine

Ardis

Lena

Inez - favorite aunt of mine. We called her Ines (I-ness)

Meta - Pretty girl at school. Is this a nn?

Muriel

Minerva - an elderly aunt of mine. Can't imagine this one making a comeback but I've been mistaken before.

Priscilla

Petra

Reina

Sylvia

Tecla - another elderly aunt. Tecla Geneva. Love Geneva.

Tyra

Althea or Thea

Any thoughts on these? I've been trying to collect names that haven't previously been used alot on this board but that's difficult. Anxious to hear your comments!

Fun list...

Nadine -- this one has a very red-neck Southern vibe to it and make me cringe a little. I can't hear it without a thick Southern accent.

Ardis -- this could grow on me

Lena -- I like this a lot. Would be a nice alternative to Elena/Alaina/etc.

Inez - I like this too. It's not for me, but I like it for others. Especially as a middle name.

Meta - Okay, I guess. I'm not wild about it.

Muriel -- I sort of like this. It fits well with the revived old-fashioned names like Ruby and Esther.

Minerva - I sort of like this, but not for a child. It's too out there for me. But it might make a good name for a pet.

Priscilla -- I've never liked this name, and I especially dislike the possibility of the nn Prissy.

Petra -- love this! I heard this on a little girl the other day and thought it was fantastic.

Reina -- I like this a lot too

Sylvia -- not a fan. This is one I feel like I should like, it seems to fit with my style. But I don't.

Tecla - This is the Spanish word for "key", so it seems strange to see it as a name.

Tyra -- ugh, I can't stand Tyra Banks, and I can't help but associate this with her.

Althea or Thea -- Not wild about Althea, but I like Thea. It's cute and spunky. I'd still be more likely to use Theodore for a boy though.

Nadine ~love it!!!!

Ardis ~not really a fan...

Lena ~I like it a lot and think it has a very pretty sound, but it also sounds to me a little like something is "missing", like it's not the full name or something. But I do like it.

Inez - ~very nice. Not everly-used.

Meta - ~am I wrong in thinking this is a letter of the Greek alphabet? I could be wrong about that... not a big fan of this one...

Muriel ~don't really like it. I know they aren't really similar or anything, but I prefer Miriam to Muriel...

Minerva - ~I like that it's a Goddess name, but I don't particularly care for it...

Priscilla ~always associate the word "prissy" with this name. Or imagine a very fluffy frou-frou white Persian cat...

Petra ~nice. Would you pronounce it Peh-Trah or Pay-Trah?

Reina ~nice.

Sylvia ~I go back and forth with this one. Sometimes I absolutely love it and other times I think it sounds a little "old".

Tecla ~ not a big fan of this one either. I like Geneva though...

Tyra ~reminds me of the supermodel...

Althea or Thea ~I like Althea better. It's nice... :-) Thea works as a nn, I guess... :-) Would you pronounce it THee-ah, or some other way?

Hello.

Great list. I have many thoughts, as I, too, make list after list (even though I'm done having babies)--- and have been making lists since before I could write LOL-

Nadine- I won't be surprised if we begin to see this one as a mn choice in the near future. It could be elegant on the right child. I prefer Sabine or Yasmine.

Ardis- I like this one, and its meaning. I love Ardith, Arden, and Tanith.

Lena- This one has made its comeback and is still coming!

Inez - favorite aunt of mine. We called her Ines (I-ness) Yes, with this pro. I like the name quite a bit. I prefer the I- names- Irini, Inga, Ingrid, Ivy, India

Meta - Pretty girl at school. Is this a nn? --- It's a German nn for Margaret but should certainly be fine as a given name here.

Muriel- Very pretty. Very fitting today without being discovered at all.

Minerva - an elderly aunt of mine. Can't imagine this one making a comeback but I've been mistaken before.

* I like Minerva. I think you might be surprised. Matilda will comeback first followed by the sporadic usage of Minerva. It lends itself so well to lighter nn- Mina/Neva/Eva/Eve/Minnie/Mia/Vera. I think it's a strong candidate. But you would have a major upper edge if you used it in the next 2-3 years.

Priscilla- It's always, always lurking. It's been in steady, if not sporadic, usage for centuries. It makes it onto a lot of women's short lists and gets scratched by men.

Petra - Not a personal fave but I can see the appeal.

Reina- Oh yes. This one lurks too and is always a fine choice for a name that fits in most any time period without being trendy.

Sylvia- It's there! It's coming! Beware.

Tecla - another elderly aunt. Tecla Geneva. Love Geneva. --- I like Geneva!

Tyra- It's already discovered and in steady, increasing usage thanks to Tyra Banks.

Althea or Thea- Oh, now you've found the real treasure! I LOVE Thea. It's absolutely gorgeous and completely undiscovered.

I have a list I call Jewels- Old names that fit right in and aren't discovered yet, if ever again-

Here it is--- *by the ones I think will make at least a partial comeback during this old-lady craze-

Marcella

Lorraine

*Betsy- Maybe as nn to Elizabeth, it will see some increased usage

Delphine

Aida (ah-ee-da)

Esmeralda

Lois

Loretta

Lucinda

Geneva

*Matilda- Already very popular in parts of Europe and Australia- we tend to follow them on many names

Saskia

Rita

Gertrude/Trudy

*Linnea

Catalina

*Clarice- With the onslaught of Claire, people may turn to this one.

Thea

Nell

Ramona

Edwina

Rowena

Antoinette

*Adela

Leona

Liora

Lenore

Althea

*Etta

Harriet

Lena is my g-grandmother's name. I've always loved it. ;)

My cousin's ex-wife is Muriel. Love the name ... but not the association. LOL

Here's my opinion, FWIW:
Nadine- Nice, old-timey feel. It could grow on me.

Ardis- NMS

Lena- I LOVE Lena!!! DH is opposed, but otherwise it'd be on my short list.

Inez - OK. I think it'd work as a good mn. Love the family association!

Meta - I don't think I've ever heard this before. From my (quick) research, it looks like it's a German form of Margareta. Cute nn!
Muriel-I'm not a big fan. I know some people like it, but I'm not on board yet.

Minerva - I can't see it making a comeback either!

Priscilla- I really like it in theory, but then I automatically see Priscilla Presley's beehive!

Petra- I LOVE Petra! It's a new fave of mine, but DH is opposed b/c it was an 80's Christian rock band. But I think it's really lovely.

Reina- Spanish for queen. I think it is a pretty name, but nms.

Sylvia- I have good associations with Sylvia, I think it's nice. Nice mn option.

Tecla - I love Geneva too! Tecla makes me think of tickle, though. Not horrible, but I don't love it.

Tyra- It's OK. Sounds masculine, probably b/c it's Scandanavian. But then again, Tyra Banks is certainly not masculine!
Althea or Thea- I like Thea by itself more than Althea. I also like Thea as a nn for Dorothea.

Interesting names!
This was fun.

Very interesting about the name Tecla. I couldn't believe how many had heard it already. I liked it with Geneva (I love Geneva) but not by itself. I really can't see it becoming popular in the near future! Thanks for your comments.

Thanks for answering!! I would pronounce Petra (Peh-trah). And Thea would be Thee-Ah. Kind of a fun list I think. Thanks again.

Thanks again Ginger. I'm glad you enjoyed the list. When I put Aunt Minerva on the list I fugured that everyone would hate it. There were quite a few of you that liked it. I'm still not sold that it will make a comeback but we'll see!

My MN is Ardis (Michelle Ardis) and I have always liked it but have gotten mixed reactions to it over the years. I met a girl years ago with that name and learned to like it then. I was going to use it several times when naming my children but always backed out. Hope to see it more often!

You also had a very interesting list. Some definately are "Jewels" but some I'm not sold on yet.

Marcella - Love this one.

Lorraine - I like it but have a bad association with this one.

Betsy - You are probably too young to remember the "Betsy Wetsy dolls" aren't you?
I do like it though.

Delphine - I know a lady named Delvene. I think I like it better than Delphine.

Aida - I always thought this was pronounced like Ada.

Lucinda - Like this too. I also like Melinda and it isn't used much any more. I adopted a baby girl from Romania and her name was Csilla-Melinda. I kinda wish that I would have kept Melinda.

Geneva - Isn't it gorgeous!!!!! I can't get anyone to use it in our family.

Gertrude - NOT REALLY! I know as woman who goes by Gertie. I really can't get into this one.

Clarice - I brought this up once on a PP and everyone disliked it because of Silence of the Lambs. I think it's so pretty and feminine.

Edwina - It's okay. I like Edlyn (not sure of spellling) better. My mother had a cousin with this name and I always thought it was pretty.

Leona and Lenore - I don't care for Leona but I do like Lenore. I also love Lenora.

The rest of your list would have to grow on me. This was great fun. Thanks for making it so enjoyable. Take care and talk to you later.
