We Can't Agree...

Here I am, due in less than three months, and we still haven’t picked out a name for my little girl. In fact my husband is so sick of talking about baby names that he refuses to discuss them anymore. It actually doesn’t bother me too much because he was starting to come up with some really strange names…

Here are the names he prefers:
(Just a reminder that our baby is a GIRL)
Joey Alyson (mn is his mom’s name)
Casey Jean (mn is my middle name)
Suki Jean (mn is my middle name)

I think he maybe be secretly hoping for a boy. ;) I really hated Suki at first. It’s a Japanese name after all and we are Japanese but she sure wouldn’t have to worry about having someone else with her name in any of her classes!

Here are the names I prefer:
Amelia ______ (nn Millie)
Kylie _____ (is it too popular?)
Maggie (I really loved this name until I found out my hubby’s Aunt and Uncle have a dog names Maggie. His whole family would associate the name with a dog! Ugh!)
Chloe ______
Zoey _______

I am sure there are more I like but I seem to sour on them quickly, especially if I find out it’s a popular name; I’d prefer something not in the top 50.

Anyway, what do you think of these names? Is Suki too off the wall (hubby is really rooting for it)!? Any other original suggestions appreciated!

You know Suki doesn't bother me at at all. You seem to like traditional names and Sukie can be a nn for Susan. Susan Jean, nn Suki could be a possible compromise for you and your husband. That way if your daughter hates Suki later on she can go by Susan.

I like the nn Joey on a girl - it is so spunky. I do prefer the full name Jocelyn or Josephine. Jocelyn Alyson looks nice.

Casey - this sounds dated to me...

You might also like Camille Jean, nn Millie/Cami

Good luck!
Brooke

Speaking of dogs, I know several named Maggie, Chloe and Zoe -- one of the reasons I'd avoid those names. I think Maggie is in the top two for dog names, right after Molly.

I've known a few Sukis - none were Japanese. Not really my style as a name either way.

I know a woman named Joey - short for Joelyn, which I love. (I'm not in love with Joey for a girl, but it's a cute nn for a tomboy)

Not really a fan of Casey for boys or girls.

So, based on your lists below, I'd go for Joelyn or Amelia.

My hubby has a cousin name Jocelyn which rules that one out (I do love the name). I hadn’t thought about Joelyn, that is cute! I thought of Jolina also, nn Joey. Josephine sounds like an old lady name to me. Probably cause the only Josephine I know is an old lady.

Camille is another cousin’s name.

How sad that I dig dog names!! I do agree I better stay away from those names.

Keep the suggestions coming on longer versions for Joey and Suki! I’d love to find a decent name that will also make my husband happy!! Thanks for the suggestions so far!!

Hi!
I really love Suki. It's spunky and sweet. Why not use it as a nickname for the beautiful name Susannah? Susannah Jean is lovely, and with the nickname Suki you get a more modern, fresh option...and it's a meaningful link to your family's background as well. Additionally, your daughter would be able to use either name as she gets older.

PS: The name "Susana" ranked at #871 for 2005 on the Social Security website, and the spelling "Susannah" (which I think is much prettier) is not even on there!

Edited to add: I know two distinguished families in Boston that have daughters (now in their 20s and 30s) named Susannah, and both use the nickname Sukey.

Joey: Johanna, Joanne, Joelle, Jordana (with Jordana - you get both Joey and Annie as possible nicknames!)

Suki: Susan, Susanna, Suzanne, Suzette

Amelia (nn Millie)- beautiful- LOVE this!
Kylie - yes, WAY too popular, trendy, and cutesy
Maggie- I love Maggie as a nn. What about using Margaret or Megan and then having the option of calling her Maggie. That way, the dog association won't be as strong. If you go with Margaret, Greta is another possible nn.
Chloe- too cutesy
Zoey - the "y" doesn't seem needed. Zoe is okay, but very cutesy

Sorry, I find Suki pretty frumpy.

I love the idea of using Alyson or Jean as a mn to honour yourself or your mother. From your choices, Amelia Jean EASILY wins IMO. The others are really cutesy and don't age well.

How about...

Jillian

Kelsey

Sarah nn Sadie

Elise

Alyssa

Chelsea

Kristin

Annabel nn Annie

Sophie

Clara/Claire

I love the idea of Susannah Jean, nn Suki. Beautiful, classic, and with a nn that DH loves.

Other ideas for Joey...
Josephine
Joelle
Joella
Joan

Good luck making a final decision!

I don't think Suki is too out there, especially if comes from your cultural backround (even if it didn't I still wouldn't think it was too out there). It could also be a nn for Susan/Susannah or Summer (or really any name that begins with Su- because the nickname is really your choice)

Joey could also be a nick name for Josephine. Or what about using Josie, Jocelyn, Joy or Joyce?

Casey- I like this but maybe you may like Cassidy, Cassandra, Catherine (could use Casey for a nn for any of those names)

Maggie- could use it as a nick name for Margaret or Marguerite; other names you may like instead Madeline (Maddie), Margo

Amelia is kind of popular (in the top 100 if that bothers you). I do think it is very cute though. If you like the nn Millie what about Camille/Camilla?

Chloe is cute as well, but is #19 so thats pretty popular. Pheobe and Zoe have the same feel and aren't as popular. Cleo is another option.

Kylie was #57 in 2005 and Zoe was #58 so they are about equal popularity.

that was just my input, I hope it may help you out!

Amelia Jean is super cute! I like it. My middle name usually doesn’t fit with too many names since it is a bit country sounding, but it seems to fit well here.

I told my husband the name Joelyn and he actually likes it. He said he’s prefer just Joey but that he’d compromise with me. I just think the poor girl needs a feminine name! He likes Joelyn Alyson (mn after his mother (her mn) and sister (her fn)).

We both seem to change our minds all the time. Is that normal? I guess we are just looking for the perfect name, if there is such a thing.

I do want to stay away from the trendy names. My hubby is such a sports lover and hopes his little girl will be too so we don’t want something to girly either. Of course, I am pretty girly so who knows who’ll rub off on her more. :)

I’m loving the input from all of you! Thanks so much!
