We like MIL's cat's name for baby #3

After our DS was born six years ago, DH and I fell in love with the name Lucy and pretty much agreed if we ever had another DD Lucy she would be. No one knew this or that we may even have another baby and years went by. A little over a year ago, my MIL and DH's brother adopted a new cat and named her Lucy. DH and I were upset but figured after years of trying our Lucy would never be. I must add the my DS was supposed to be Ben and the same brother-in-law named a new cat Ben three days before my son was born. This he knew about. So this was not the first time a potential baby name has been used by him for a cat. Anyway, here I sit 18 weeks pregnant and we still really love Lucy but are bothered by the cat. Is this really a big deal? Should I ax the name because of the cat? They live 15 minutes away so it is not like my possible DD would only see them once a year.

We do have another name which is Georgia. So there is a back-up. This also has special meaning as it's meaning is the last name of a dear friend of ours who passed away five months ago. However, we are really wondering if having a child that shares a name with a family pet that may not live with you but you see often enough is a big deal. Thanks for the chance to ramble and ask my silly question.

I like Lucy, but if it really bothers you - how about Lucette, Lucinda, Lola, Lucille , Eloise,

Well, I love cats so I wouldn't be offended if I got named after a cat.

Yes, ax the name because of the cat. :) I always think names should not be repeated in families, even if it is a pet's name.

Lucy is becoming a pretty popular cat/dog name.

AJ, enjoying life with C.

I wouldn't use Lucy, even if the cat isn't in the same house as you. I can't exactly put it into words, but it seems so wrong to me.

ETA that I love the name Georgia, and I think it would be a sweet tribute to your deceased friend.

I love Georgia.
I would ax Lucy because of the cat. I do have a child whose name is very popular with dogs. I remember when he was tiny tiny we were at my SIL's mother's house and she had an 8 month old dog named Max. MY wee baby Max started to cry when she yelled "DOWN MAX!!!" at her dog.

Imagine these conversations: Lucy ate some tuna last night and barfed on the floor. X isn't here right now, he had to run out and get some little for Lucy.

It stinks, but cats can live a LONG time, and your poor little daughter would feel like she was named after a cat!

not a big deal to share a name with the cat because lucy is great and kids get priority over pets...maybe cat can go by lu or lulu after baby is born. georgia is great too.

I think if I were in your shoes I would be bothered and probably wouldn't use the name. I think you should go with you gut but think Georgia is a beautiful name actually better than Lucy. "Georgi" would make a cute nn for her also but do not tell your MIL that would be another cat ...lol it isn't really funny more like pathetic that they can't pick names out theirselves.

I have cousins who named their son Zack b/c it was THE name, even though their dog was named Zeke. It never seemed to bother them, but it might be different with the exact same name. Cats live longer too, another consideration. I'd wait and see; she might just look like a Georgia and the problem will be solved.
